Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Good news for the desktop!

International Data Corp. (IDC), a leading market research firm, predicts that in 2013 33% of new enterprise applications will be mobile business applications. David McNally, IT Executive Advisor at IDC, said, IT organizations will need to decide to which mobile platforms they develop their applications with as almost half of the mobile application budget will go towards maintaining these apps.
This suggests that 67% of the applications will be traditional!

So that would mean the glass is way more than half full, its over two-thirds! I am thinking I want those people to run off to mobile development. It will leave a hole for us desktop guys to step into, but tell anyone so it will stay a secret. :)

They end on 12/21/2012! That is if you are Mayan.

I'll be pleased to discuss this the other side of the great divide.

There was a small mechanical failure brought on by the Mayan predictions.
The red fuel light in my car came up on Wednesday.
I tried to stall filling up until after Friday - why waste a tank of gas?
Friday I ran out on the way to the petrol station.
More disaster followed - all brought on by the damn Mayans who didn't even predict their own demise.

The comment at the bottom of the article says a lot Peter.
From a Luddite perspective I don't see the Cloud, SAAS or Tablets taking over.
Many don't trust the Cloud not to lose data, same with SAAS and having a reliable connection when you are on the road, and Tablets are great for communication again when at home or in range of a good connection but not so good for processing.
At the moment I view Tablets and Smart 'Phones as things to give added convenience to my life, but I've been wrong before and will be again.
Mobile isn't the enemy, but it's something I have little interest in at present.

Don't knock these "old" languages! ...

I still use good old COBOL when having to process, cross-reference and merge huge amounts of data!

I developed several parameter-file driven processes, that I can configure very quickly to handle any number of input large files.

My Fujitsu COBOL V5 apps [compiled routines, running on XP] leaves MS SQL Server in the dust. I can do in a couple of hours what will take MSSQL all night!

Remember ... it's horses for courses!

Re: Good news for the desktop!

Its worth it to read the IDC article, referenced in the first post: http://www.idc.com/research/Predicti...ble/238044.pdf

Here also is a Gartner article about the gradual demise of the traditional Windows desktop application (this is their opinion, nothing quoted from Windows here): http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...n_says_Gartner

"Most enterprises that adopt Windows 8 will continue to use Win32 applications and a traditional desktop browser through 2015, said Silver and his colleagues, but by 2020, users will spend less than 10% of their time on that platform, and thus on the desktop. By then, the browser and most applications, including what Gartner called "OS-neutral" apps, will run in Metro using the WinRT runtime.

That means Microsoft will likely spend little energy from this point forward improving the Windows desktop.

"Gartner expects Microsoft to include the Windows Desktop in future releases, but improvements will be relatively minor," the research firm said, comparing future support for the desktop to the longtime inclusion of the DOS command line in Windows.

Annual Subscriptions include priority support (email, website forums), maintenance and updates with no requirement to purchase new versions as and when they become available. You can choose to purchase the product "once off" and pay for upgrades to new "point releases" (e.g. 1.0 to 1.1 or 1.1 to 1.2) or purchase an annual subscription which provides new versions at no additional charge.
                          Seems competitvely priced Ray.

Just how much is there to be improved? (I mean REAL improvements).

Many so-called "improvements" between OS platforms have really been largely cosmetic ... change the look and move things around just to make it look different ... and worth the upgrade!

Why are so many still hanging onto XP? Because there is not a compelling-enough reason to "upgrade" to W7 or W8 ... along with needing a more-powerful system and having to re-learn how to do things! (The furore over Microsoft's removal of the user-familiar "Start" button in W8 [and the subsequent workarounds!] shows what happens when changes are taken too far and for no justifiable reason).

Similarly, just how many more incarnations of MS Office can there be? I originally used Office 2000 and like most users, I used a very small subset of the available features. I upgraded to Office 2007 several years ago, but I'm not using any more than I did in the 2000 product!

I am happy to see that Visual FoxPro lives on. While not a VFP developer I have seen some really nice apps designed and developed using it. I know there are many developers who will hope this new product proves to be a worthy successor.
