Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Microsoft does it again this time web designers....

For those that follow these things. Microsoft just dropped its Expression Web Studio products. Many are now free and may well be useful in designing bits and graphics for web site work. They may be nice utility programs for A5 developers. Just a thought.

Anyway, MS strikes again and a number of web designers are not happy.

I have Microsoft expressions on my shelf from several years ago. Maybe they improved since then, but I have never used a more overly complex and frustrating tool, it made everything more difficult

Web developer studio was targeted to developers. Developers do not need this kind of tools anymore in web development.

Almoust all web developer are using today some kind of mvc (or mvvm) platform.
So there is data, template and functions. Everything is very simple and clear.

I use this model with Alpha but because of this desicion I cant (and will not) use any Alphas components.

I want to have full control to source code (and css). With components I don't have. Also I use third party javascript framework with mvc(mvvm) support. Integrating components to it I suppose is not easy task.

Anybody interested of this kind of programming can watch this video.

I watched the video. I admit this is not anything I have experience with, but it looks like a hell of a lot of work just to build the components, let alone build a complete application. In the video they only built a few data-entry forms, nothing beyond that -- no application, no database connection, etc. I'm not putting it down -- a lot of the discussion was over my head -- and yet I am building robust web applications already and will never have to know any of that stuff.

I must say this video opened my eyes and now year after I almost can really do something with this way of programming. Hole thing is not a big mess anymore. Also I have learned xbasic quite a bit during this year. I also did a move from sql to json so everything really changed.

Re: Microsoft does it again this time web designers....

Web Expression was to be the replacement for the old MS FrontPage program, and was intended to compete with DreamWeaver. It was geared more for designers and enjoyed good reviews. But it was not overly data-centric, so MS recommended and had tutorials about working the designer side with Expression Web and for the data side using Visual Studio Express Web Developer.

That said a couple of pieces of the now defunct Expression family are now available for free, one is Expression Designer. My thinking was given its now free it may be a useful utility to build design pieces for for use with A5, nice graphics, buttons, etc. Here is how MS describe the product.

"Microsoft Expression Design is an application for graphic designers and developers who want to build graphics for application user interfaces, the Internet, or any other medium. Expression Design offers powerful features to help you express your creativity in any project that demands high-quality graphic design."

My real point of the original post is that once again Microsoft shut down a development platform. Its not their first. consider Visual FoxPro, Silverlight and now the Expression line of tools. I don't know about anyone else, but it makes it hard to invest in their development tools. They are getting far too unpredictable for me.

Very interesting is also situation in Asp.Net development. There is three roads to choose and this confuses developers. What is quite sure is that the developers using the traditional event driven Asp.Net Forms are in (big) trouble. Asp.Net Forms future is unclear at the moment.

I think Microsoft is having big pressure from competitors. Here is interesting article Google vs Microsoft

Ken - thanks for the article link. I suppose MS could be reducing it development tools to an all inclusive Visual Studio, but can you imagine the price and bloat of such an offering.

I have used Google Apps now Google apart of Google Drive for sometime and like them. Call me crazy but I really like Google Forms. I also have used SkyDrive from MS and in my mind its a superior offering to Google Drive for storage. It also integrates nicely with Windows 7 and 8.

                    Happy New Year everyone!
