Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Advice on recommended system for developing v11 web application

I am new to A5. Just purchased the full subscription, and have downloaded v11 developer so far. If I am developing on a laptop (developing for web applicaton as the target), would a 64bit windows 7 laptop with 4GB memory be recommended for good performance while developing a web app? I currently have a 2GB 32bit windows 7 home (intel celeron) laptop, and would hate to install and use v11 developer on my current laptop, if it will be slow in performance.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Here's what I found:

    On 64-bit WIN-7, 4GB's & 3 GHz processor is a lot faster than 6GB's & 2.5 GHz processor.

Thanks - basically just trying to undersand if buying a fast laptop is going to make a difference in performance while using A5 during development

GHZ has always seemed to be the first priority for what you are doing.
My findings over the years=Desktop seems to be much faster when all else is the same, more memory is a BIG help. You need memory for data so it keeps disk access to a minimum. When designing, you need processor speed as Peter said.

        I currently have a 3.5ghz 32 bit desktop with xp3 and 4 gig mem(It is a rocket), a 2.0 ghz desktop with linux and 1 gig mem, a 2.8 ghz 64 bit desktop with win7 and 6 gig mem(fast enough), a 2.2 ghz laptop with win7 64 bit and 6 gig mem(not real fast-but enough), a 2.5ghz laptop with win8 and 6 gig mem(a rocket).

Thanks - that helps. A new Dell lattitude notebook - i5 processor 2.5Ghz 4GB Ram, 320GB hard drive, 64bit windows 7 - is about $625. Unless I hear that A5 v11has problems running under 64bit windows 7, I will most likely be looking to buy that Dell laptop.

I cannot find anything that says A5 v11 will run on windows 8 - so I'm cautious about getting that.

            Dave,

I had no problem with win8 and v11. I bought a lenovo with win7 and did the cheap upgrade from MS to win 8. It is plenty fast enough and costed about $400.00. Would have liked a larger screen though.
            Cpu = amd a6-4400m 2.7g/3.2g
            ram 4gig
            hdd = 500gig
            15.6 screen
Lenovo is made by IBM, but under a different name.
One note = Customer service sucks.

Thanks Dave - that's over $200 cheaper than the lattitude - going to check that out :)

Re: Advice on recommended system for developing v11 web application

                  Hi Dave
I've been selling hardware for over 33 yrs. My business is essentially providing IT support for businesses that are too small to have their own IT department. I started out building them myself but for the last 10 yrs I've had them custom built for me. They have been very reliable (ave. lifespan of 5-7 yrs, and I just replaced one that was 11 yrs old running W98!).
But you should shop around. I recently replaced my own machine (Intel Core2 Duo, 4G Ram, 250G H/D) with one that I bought from Staples: an Acer M3970, Intel i5, 6G RAM, 1TB H/D for $430 and it is much faster. I changed the video card and put an Acer 27" monitor on it for $230 (along with my old Acer X223w) and it makes a great development environment. It could use a new developer though - the current one is getting old and doesn't seem to learn as quickly as it used to.
For laptops, I have sold nothing but Acer for the last 8-10 years (and I've tried Toshiba, Sony, IBM, and HP). The fastest one I've sold was an Acer Aspire 7750G (Intel i7, 6G RAM, 750G H/D, 17.3" screen). It is used by a guy that does CAD and requires high speed graphics.
You have to be cautious of price. Many manufacturers (including Acer) seem to make special machines for some distributors that aren't quite up to snuff although the specs are the same. I've had several people bring me machines that were purchased at seemingly bargain prices and have failed within 1-2 years but I have only had to replace one Acer (out of hundreds) that I bought direct from Acer.
Lastly, I swear by Laplink's PCMover for moving an old machine to a new one. I shudder every time I change machine because of the number of applications I have to migrate but Laplink always comes through (although moving from XP32 bit to Win7 64 bit was a bit traumatic)

Whatever you buy; make sure it has an SSD or put an SSD in it. A world of difference!

Be sure you have plenty of browsers to check your work on. This is for any web application. I use at least 2 versions of ie, chrome, and firefox. You would be surprised at the differences that can show up across browsers.

I can't see the reason for wanting to use a laptop for designing and development purposes. Do you have special reasons for that? Being often mobile, or?

Laptops are not designed to work all day long at top performances and last for years under that strain.
If you want to develop professionally, I would recommend thinking about using server grade material in stead of a laptop.

I develop on a Dell Server, which is build to run 24x7. I exchanged some hardware like the videocard to give it more screen umph, inserted memory to the max, but that's about it. Performs like a dream. Does not have to be that expensive either, of course depending on the specs you want and what you want to add to it. All starts pretty cheap.

All our developers used to have 32" monitors. That requires special videocards however and is of course pricey.
