Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

This is the kind of testimonial that generates (substantiates) credibility!

Doron: Oops! Never mind ... and apologies! I was not digging in far enough. Actually, a compliment ... I love your write-up of Alpha Five under "Website Development" > "Alpha Five Developers"! You have very carefully and correctly positioned A5, to play down what is proprietary but to accentuate the standards!

I know this will come off all wrong, but I am suprised after all these years I am still one of the very, very few Developers* who has his own company website on Alpha Five, since 2007.

*I know Peter on this thread has his site in Alpha.

                  Hi Steve,

I have my own web site at least for 16 years. Many major projects came through my web site before even Google existed and Yahoo was the major search engine in town. Somehow many developers may not take their marketing efforts seriously enough but I do. Creating new material for the web site for me it is ongoing process.

                    Steve,

It's the same as with mobile ... not everyone needs mobile; and even in this day and age, not everyone really needs a website. If you can get all the business you need without one, why have one?

A large chunk of what I do involves processing, analyzing and reformatting certain types of data from County Government offices around the US. I don't need a website to advertise/promote that. Even in 2013, many of those government entities are operating just fine on "primitive" IT infrastructure ... "big iron" [mainframes/minis], tapes, etc.! Their IT departments also think and operate from a different era, BUT ... everything works for them and they are not looking to change anytime soon.

I have gone through a lot of effort and trials building and improving alphatogo.com, alphadevnet.com, my own shopping cart, project management, timesheets, and a lot more that I personally use... This has made me a far better Alpha Five developer than if I was only building applications for paying clients. But that is off the subject of this thread, I was just reflecting on it recently.

I am Mike's manager. He is part of our small workgroup of four developers, each of whom was assigned one development tool to research (that list was whittled down from a longer one). As he stated, we are engaged in a search for a RAD environment that is a good fit for our team's experience and for our circumstances. I'd like to thank each of you for your enthusiastic responses to his post on this forum. The answers and insights were reassuring and, frankly, impressive. Alpha Five is a front runner in our evaluation, and your input is a significant part of that.

I'm a believer in "doing your homework" (aka, thorough research) before committing the funds and the energy it will take to switch our development environment to something new. The next step is for all four of us to install the Alpha Five trial and throw some of our real world business scenarios at it. We'll be doing both desktop and web applications (the latter was Mike's focus in the first phase).

Because so many of you were willing to contribute your thoughts, we may come back to the well again in the near future as the evaluation continues. Again, thanks for your input.

                            Dwight,

As you have seen, there are some lively discussions on this forum!

Your [business] "story" and evaluation process would make excellent and informative reading for others also trying to get to grips with the major ... no, critical! ... decision of choosing a software development platform.

If you do decide to go with A5, I hope you will eventually allow Alpha Software to do a Case Study on your company's evaluation and use of the product.

A major problem with A5 is not whether or not it can do the job, but that it's a hidden gem and by not being perceived as "mainstream" as other platforms, it gets overlooked.

                                Mike & Dwight,

I can't add anything new to this thread so I'll just add to all the positive remarks.
I'm not a programmer but I now have a very deep, robust web application with SQL backend.
The basic design was up and running within 6 months and now, 2 years later has been substantially expanded and improved in it's capabilities.
Alpha Five is a fantastic product ... and this forum is equally great!
