Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Three very resounding cheers for Selwyn and his team

By its very nature we see quite a lot of negative comments on this forum, often well founded and sometimes not.
I always believe if one is quick to criticise one is honour bound to be as quick in praise and appreciation when you receive service and support way beyond what you could reasonably expect and that is where I find myself today.
The attention and support I have had from Selwyn over what must be just one of a large number of issues crossing his desk daily is outstanding.
    Thank you Alpha

Re: Three very resounding cheers for Selwyn and his team

      Hi Dave,
Our mainstream application, of which we have sold quite a number, relies very heavily on the user being able to export pre formatted letters and accounts to word or similar for further editing.
This worked very well for us in all versions up to and including V10.
When V11 came on stream Alpha, for a number of technical reasons especially revolving around 64 bit systems, were forced to bundle a newer version of the Amyuni print driver / converter which made a total dogs breakfast of the RTF output.Essentially every block of text was in a frame which made editing impossible.
Undeterred we pressed on using V10 and even built an install routine that would install V10 and set compatability mode in Windows 8 without user intervention, essential when sending out demo versions for potential clients to install. Just as we were patting ourselves on the back we found that when using the export options, both RTF and PDF on a Windows 8 machine with Office 2013 the application just hung. Seems Office 2013 does not like being called from a programme running in compatability mode as all worked fine on a windows 7 box with office 2013.
The first suggestion from Selwyn was to convert our free format letters and reports to table layouts and use the new export routine that bypasses the Amyuni driver but I simply could not get satisfactory results using this method so all was looking rather bleak until Selwyn came up with a solution that allows the new V12 beta to use the old amyuni driver when exporting to RTF and now everything works brilliantly and the remarkable thing is all this was achieved in less than 24 hours.
I have to say in the 20 plus years I have been using Alpha as our primary application building tool this is not the first time I have been fortunate enough to receive such swift and effective help.

        Amazing,

As I was reading this, I heard a noise to look around and see one of my pups making breakfast of a lett I had just printed off. It was in RTF! He seemed to like it!

Thanks for the elaboration and it helps all of us with the newer things win8 has dropped on us.

Most of us have similar stories and it is a good thing. Had you been working with most other companies, no help or very slow help would be forthcoming.

Bob- thanks for the post. The compliment is fully deserved by the Alpha team. I also like the expanded explanation, I know it will help others in the future and if I understand correctly it will add incentive to move to v 12 when it becomes available.

I can fully endorse the comments above from first hand experience from the very beginning when we started with V10 about 3 years ago. That is the main reason we have no hesitation about the subcription model at all.

Only quite good, I would say it is excellent in this market place.
