Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help Out a newbie?

I'm just down-right confused at this point. I just jumped onto A5 at V11 and now all the talk about changing the pricing model with V12(anywhere) makes we wonder if I shouldn't be considering another RAD product. I've been working with 'proprietary' programming environments for the last 20 years (industry and product specific) and I thought that A5 would be a great chance for me to move into business programming environment for my business, and perhaps to branch out to offering services for other businesses. I dabble in C# and Java, Jscript and the like, but am not a hard core coder (but I do have a few who work for me).

I am looking to move my business's current SaaS system over to a self hosted, web-based system where I can code in the features our SaaS system does not. Additionally as I add users I am paying $300/year for each employee (15 employees and growing) that I add to the system, and of course every employee has to be a user in order for our workflow and system to function... costs are mounting. Storage is also becoming an issue as they charge a fortune for data storage once we exceed our allotment.

The V11 pricing model is affordable. I dont understand the V12 model yet, but the costs seem less than my currently SaaS. I am a bit concerned about investing time learning a non-proprietary language/environment, and future direction of Alpha. It seems like a great product to get things working quickly, and albeit small company has a solid community.

What advantage does A5 have over these suggested alternatives - based on standards, and ongoing costs, and support costs? Broad question I know. sorry if its too broad, but I am anxious to dig in to A5, but have these nagging concerns and want to select the right platform to move forward.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rb

    Thanks in advance.

You must be referring to v11 costs. V12 costs have not been released yet.

    What is your concern?

Maybe someone who has worked with SaaS can shed light on that. It sounds like you are paying storage fees to SaaS. Alpha does not have a system for storing data so that is your option. Your costs will be the license fees which in v11 are for the A5 Development, RT and Web Application Server. You probably won't need RunTime. Until Alpha releases the pricing structure for v12 all you can do is compare v11 pricing. V11 will continue to be sold after the release of v12 which indicates there will be some major changes whci may/may not benefit you.

No doubt, there are other thoughts out there.
    TYVM :) kenn

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

Alpha Five v12 pricing will be a lot less than what you are paying now.

Details will be announced shortly. In the meantime please email me at [email protected] and I will walk through the options.

        Ron Baylin,

Alpha is a great product. Incredible flexibility and great power. Yes, xbasic is proprietary but it is one of the easiest to learn languages out there and very powerful. Grids and components can take advantage of CSS, HTML and JavaScript if you like. it's hard to make a mistake with Alpha.

It's true we are all a little concerned on the pricing, licensing structure of the upcoming v12. I think they may have made some unwise suggestions on what they might do, but I'm hoping that in the end reason will prevail. In the mean time try out Alpha v11 and see if you aren't impressed. Please note that this message board is a resource beyond compare and you will find a tremendous amount of help and support here from many seasoned Alpha programmers.

        Good luck!

          Ron,

V11 is great, V12 will be greater.

I am one of the loudest complainers when I feel it necessary, but I am NOT complaining about the product. If you found something in v11 you dould not do, just ask on here and somebody already did that and v12 is stronger.

            Hi Ron,

See below this link I posted in LinkedIn and it was copied into the Alpha Five message board.

Here is another article that I wrote about Alpha Five and why I decided that A5 is the ultimate software development tool for my company: http://alphasoftware.net/from-visual...-five-via-net/.

It is the most productive web based application development versus all products that you will try to test. I went through this route and can save you tons of time. Regarding the prices let's wait for the official announcement from A5.

            Regards,

                Re: Help Out a newbie?

Ron, as long as this subscription and pricing stuff gets ironed out, and cleared up, Alpha Five is a great product. More so, the company is also great, and support is awesome. Yes, a lot of us have complained recently due to some miscommunication, but that does not change the fact that the product is sound, and the company is also very good when it comes to support.

Demo - created in "10-12 hours" in the beta of Alpha Five v12.

According to the developer - who is the IT director of a winery in South Australia.

Pretty remarkable productivity compared to the alternatives!

And it runs on all modern mobile devices and on the desktop web.
