Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dear Alpha,

Do you really expect everyone to be able to figure this out? These instructions are NOT correct because these files CANNOT be installed. They must be downloaded, unzipped and then copied to the A5v11 folder.

Why does Alpha continue to believe all users think like an Alpha programmer? Too often, we are given incomplete instructions or instructions which do not illustrate a common task. We are also given instructions which say to "go here" or "go over there" and are left in a daze because the movement was so fast that it takes several views to figure out where "over here" or "over there" is. All I'm asking for are complete, accurate instructions. That is a reasonable request, is it not?

    Ken,

You have posted well over 7.000 messages so I don't consider you a newbie. AEX files have been around a long time to provide patches -at the discretion of Alpha- to users on a private basis before a new build becomes available sometimes within the hour after a bug is reported. The AEX file you refer to is for the current beta and betatesters are considered to be somewhat technical and knowledgeable about Alpha5. So if you're not in that category then just wait for the next build. Is this really the first time you try to install an AEX patch ? If yes then a simple question here on the board would have helped you out. Bashing won't bring you anywhere and it is disrespectful.

So I'll wait to see if you want to ask fellow developers and maybe I'll take the time to answer.

      Ken,

      Don't mind people like that.

Looks like you figured it all out. Took what, 10 seconds or less to figure it out?

I have had alpha send aex files to me before, actually made them available to download. I just copied them to the exe folder and all was fine. They overwrote the ones that were there. Usually in program files.

You are dead right! They should give a few instructions.

Some of these technically knowledgeable people that are testing a5v12 send me a lot of work and I thank them for it. Too bad some of them write such poor programs and people like me have to make them work good and last more than a couple years. I can make a fair living fixing what others did without knowing the future consequencies.

        Re: Build 4137 AEX FIles

        Hi Frank,

This post is not intended to bash Alpha. Nor do I consider what I said to be bashing Alpha because what I said are long established facts going back well over several years. The fact that I have been around awhile has nothing to do with it nor does experience have anything to do with it.

The AEX file you refer to is for the current beta and betatesters are considered to be somewhat technical and knowledgeable about Alpha5.
This shows you missed my point, which is not about what I did to solve the issue, but about Alpha's lack of understanding there are users who are very inexperienced.

        The point is this:

        1. Alpha's main market for the DIYers, is it not?

        2. Anyone who uses v11 and sets the menu to check for upgrades gets the same view, to check for updates. It says nothing about the experience level of a user. Rather, it only cautions about using the beta updates for production.

        3. Clearly, Alpha used the word install. Do you think that there would not be some who would not wonder what do when they run into the word "Open" and then try to open the files?

        4. What are they to think? The natural tendency to to ask, What is going on here? Now what am I supposed to do? What Alpha said to do can't be done. Now what? There's nothing that tells me what to do?

The fact is, there are users of v11 who don't know what to do in a situation like this and they need clear and accurate instructions. It would behoove Alpha to understand that and gear their instructions and documentation towards that end. Additionally, there is a recent thread which speaks to the lack of clarity in one of the videos. It would also behoove Alpha to put themselves in the mindset of a new to Alpha user and try to understand how they interpret Alpha's approach to the documentation, either written or video.

One can have the greatest product in the world but lousy documentation and it will not outsell a lousy product with well written documentation. That is a simple fact.

Thank you, Dave. Quite frankly, my statements are facts and if there is any bashing in this, then it's the facts that do it and that in itself, is Alpha bashing Alpha.

So, the build. Any major issues seen with it yet? I'm not a gambling man but we've had some weird stability issues I could use some help with, so I might take the plunge...
