I do several web pages as month for individuals and very small to small companies. That has been declining over the past year or two.
I am getting more calls now for replacements of desktop applications with web apps. Dan is right even with small to medium sized businesses. They want their face on the web, but they also want a way to run all aspects of their business on mostly the same site. They want their day to day data imputters to see a web page.
Why?: They can access it from home, on the road, by phone/tablet, office, or even McDonald's. They also feel there is less likelyhood, an employee will muck with the app to try and make it better.
Whether they need all this or not is up for question, but they have it in their mind to do it and our jobs are to get it done. Each time, they need a change, they will come back to us as the developer more often than trying to hire someone else to try and fix/update/upgrade it. This brings the possibility of added income for all of us.
Friend of mine just finished a similar app for a computer repair/parts/build store just down the road from me. It has all that Dan is talking about and since they travel to flea markets and other places, they needed tablets to conduct business.
I turned down a contract(for moral reasons) a few months ago where the company was offering me 150.00 per hour to create a web app that had to(his words) run on java and css with sql backend. I'm sure he read all this stuff on the web somewhere and thought it would make a good pornsite. Not my thing. Before I found out what it was for, I had already switched him off that if I would do the job.
All this comes with a simple and kept up craigslist ad.
