I was just about to start developing an Alpha Five database for a client but upon seeing this fundamental change in the pricing model I don't know if I will still use alpha five.
v11 is likely sufficient for our needs and we'll be very happy with it. However, I worry about how long it will be supported. I'd like to think I could upgrade from it to a similar system for many years to come. But if we're going to be forced into a subscription system where my client doesn't have control over his database... I may have to go with an open source solution.
I really don't want to do this... I was very excited about using Alpha Five and this is going to cause all sorts of havoc with my client. The whole project is going to get terminated.
Please help me understand why this isn't a deal breaker.
We had chosen Alpha Five in large part because the license gave us control over the database going forward with no weird DRM or licensing gimmicks that could force us to upgrade before we were ready. It seems like AS is making their licensing more like their competitors but their old licensing was a BIG reason we were going to choose them.
Please. Am I freaking out about nothing or is this sinking feeling in the pit of my gut justified? I was more then happy to shell out for the complete license package. Developer, run time, server, all the addons, the books, the works. But what am I buying? Why would I invest my time and my client's money in this system if its being completely changed to something unrecognizable? I feel like I'd be wasting my time and doing my client a disservice. I can't in good conscience do this to them.
Please tell me there is some other licensing agreement that is a one off fee. We're willing to pay a reasonable fee for a great software package. But we do not want to RENT your software. We want to BUY it. If you're not selling to SELL we won't buy.
Help me out here.
