Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Subscription?! Very concerned

I was just about to start developing an Alpha Five database for a client but upon seeing this fundamental change in the pricing model I don't know if I will still use alpha five.

v11 is likely sufficient for our needs and we'll be very happy with it. However, I worry about how long it will be supported. I'd like to think I could upgrade from it to a similar system for many years to come. But if we're going to be forced into a subscription system where my client doesn't have control over his database... I may have to go with an open source solution.

I really don't want to do this... I was very excited about using Alpha Five and this is going to cause all sorts of havoc with my client. The whole project is going to get terminated.

Please help me understand why this isn't a deal breaker.

We had chosen Alpha Five in large part because the license gave us control over the database going forward with no weird DRM or licensing gimmicks that could force us to upgrade before we were ready. It seems like AS is making their licensing more like their competitors but their old licensing was a BIG reason we were going to choose them.

Please. Am I freaking out about nothing or is this sinking feeling in the pit of my gut justified? I was more then happy to shell out for the complete license package. Developer, run time, server, all the addons, the books, the works. But what am I buying? Why would I invest my time and my client's money in this system if its being completely changed to something unrecognizable? I feel like I'd be wasting my time and doing my client a disservice. I can't in good conscience do this to them.

Please tell me there is some other licensing agreement that is a one off fee. We're willing to pay a reasonable fee for a great software package. But we do not want to RENT your software. We want to BUY it. If you're not selling to SELL we won't buy.

    Help me out here.

Ah... Sorry, I didn't read through the full pricing sheet. Your initial graph really should include all the options rather then burying the perpetual license at the bottom. You guys gave me a heart attack.

Can I get some break down on how this scales? There are pricing tiers and I think my client sadly falls slightly in between them.

What I'd like is a 4 core perpetual license with all the bells and whistles for about 7 concurrent users. Looking at the price sheet, it seems to jump from 700 USD for 5 concurrent users to 1900 for unlimited. Could I possibly pay 1000 for 7 concurrent users?

The money isn't that much of a big deal. I just don't like paying for something I'm not using. Further, its for a small business and for them a price difference of a thousand dollars actually matters... if only psychologically.

In any case, I appear to have answered some of my own questions and will probably go with v12 if its fully baked and ready to go. Or just go with v11 if someone can tell me that the company is making a commitment to offering these perpetual licenses which are frankly a requirement.

You can safely go with v12 (alpha anywhere) it offers a boat load more fore web and offers a cool genuine mobile capability
because a perpetual option (no required ongoing license fees) is avialable -- check out http://alphaanywhere.blogspot.com/20...for-alpha.html

Also feel free to contact me at [email protected]
