Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Application user limits & license Price Questions

    Hi guys,

I am thinking about moving away from desktop applications and building web based applications.

If i build an application running off a server am i limited to how many users can use

My database depending on the license purchased?

    Could someone explain this please?

Also if i need to purchase additional alpha server applications for
Different domains what are the costs?

    Thanks

    Joe

I believe you are only limited by how many users the server and WAS can support. I don't think there is a magical number.

Re: Application user limits & license Price Questions

There are a lot of limitations and then there are none as far as I have found out. One way to have multiple users with one server is to put an instance of your app in a seperate folder - each user has their own URL like
      1. www.example.com/user1
      2. www.example.com/user2
      3. www.example.com/user3

so in the root there are 3 folders respectively.
Developing in Alpha 5 you simply change the connection string (don 't create new ones or you have to manually edit each grid,ux etc.) to hit each users own database and then create a separate publishing profile for each user, then all you have to do is edit the security users. If you do not have much breakdown of security settings per grid or component you may not have to even include the data security groups everytime - but
this allows many users of your app with as many databases as you can setup.

On the other hand if you want to setup several "websites" each with its own URL meaning separate root or "domain" - you will need additional alpha5 servers running on your host or respective hosts each with its own licensed server application, and there are some tutorials on that setup already if you look for them. I find that the most expenseive way and for me I think it puts any developer in a very expensive bracket that would kill most startups.
      http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...ication+Server
is a great place to start.

I wish there was a way to have a central server that would simply authenticate a valid license, and pass an ok to an instance of a free server on what ever host machine you deployed it - sort of like a handshake server rather than a web server of proprietor pages. but that's a very abstract thought.

Now I want you to remember one thing - I am going off of my own personal experience. I am a noob so take my advice as just that and NOT facts. There are probably better ways, but I do not know them.

On another note, cost can be factored in many ways. If you build your app as I suggest, managing an update to a database could be a very big deal. Creating a Saas app would be a better approach or rather implementing record level security on a group basis. I do not know of an easy way to do it in Alpha but I know it is possible as others have done it.

I make between 3 and 6 applications a year for different clients with different isp's. Most are on linux or unix servers now.
Is that going to be a problem and there seems to be some pricing issues, so asking this?: What are my costs going to be for 6 database web applications in one year with different clients?

Should I ask sales, which is something I like to avoid at all costs until sure of a product?

Re: Application user limits & license Price Questions

Ignoring database admin costs and misc., cost would be $1000 per year perpetual per client for the web server subscription, and additional $1000 per year for you for the Developer subscription. There are various deals for multi-year subscriptions at reduced rates. If any client needed to take over development or have any ability to alter the program you built, that would be an additional $1000 perpetual subscription for them as well.

And also ask Sales. They might have a slightly different answer depending on what offer they are running.

Should add, hosting is minimum additional $1000 per year per client if you are hosting each on separate server.

Re: Application user limits & license Price Questions

Just had this confirmed by seth.

The server costs $999 with unlimited users. Finding the

Right info with cost Was a mission to find and now understand

why. The way i understand this is for every client that

Wants a database hosted on there own that is managed

Via a web browser on a pc, mac, iphone etc the cost is $999
plus the client needs to pay for hosting plus the cost of The software.

I personally think there are truckloads of customers that are willing to
Pay around $300 for a system sold repeatedly to the same market than
customers Willing to pay $2500 to $4000 for a custom software system
The server application may be targeted towards.

The best practice would be to let each client have there own
                  Hosting with an alpha server.

                  Thanks for the replies.

                  Regards

                  Joe
