Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mysql to sql

I currently have my application running on a mysql server background, I need to change this to sql.

Can anyone perhaps assist me in telling me what the implications would be to my current application and what would I need to change?

I don't want to make changes then realise I have messed up my application.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Re: Mysql to sql

In theory, once you have moved your data over all you need to do is modify your connection string. This assumes that you are not using any MySQL-specific functions, etc your the Alpha side queries. Although there may be field changes, e.g. if you are using tinyint for logical, in SQL it's a "bit" field type.

      Hi Peter

      Thanks for the info.

I will go through the application and check for Mysql functions, there may be a couple.

I went the other direction a couple of years ago, and for the components, Peter's thoughts are generally true. The exceptions are where you haven't used Alpha's portable SQL syntax or extremely basic SQL in your code; ADDDATE() in MySQL is DateAdd() in SQL Server, `myField` in MySQL is [myField] in SQL Server. But for the most part, it's that easy.

          Re: Mysql to sql

I have created the sql database and have changed my connection string.

The active link table is showing the first record duplicated over and over up until the number of records. I have removed the date fields from the active table and the data then shows as it should, putting the date field back then it once again only shows the first record duplicated.

Can anyone perhaps tell me what could be happening here?

The SQL database field type is "Date" on those fields, the orginal MYSQL field was also date.

          Any help will be appreciated.

          Thank you

            Re: Mysql to sql

If I remember correctly, the structure of Date is different in the two SQL types.
I presume you have refreshed the Active link?
Have you tried recreating the linked Table?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

              Re: Mysql to sql

I assume you are referring to MS SQL Server vs MySQL.
I believe there is also a difference in the way concatenation is done with MySQL being "CONCAT(a,b,c)" and SQL Server is more like "a+b+c".
As has been mentioned, may not be a problem if using Alpha's "portable SQL".

My suggestion: Stop using active link tables and convert to a direct link to the SQL tables.

                  Hi There,

I also suggest you to use Date and Time field instead of Date field only. In terms of manipulations it works better with A5.

                  Regards,
