Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • IADN website face lift - critique

I spent some time this weekend updating the IADN website (www.iadn.com). I also changed the logo. If anyone has time, please take a look and give me a critique. For reference I attached an image of the old site.

    The website is here: www.iadn.com.

I used a couple different 3rd party utilities to spruce it up (but I did not use a template, did it all by hand):

    Hi Steve,
    • The website definitely looks better
    • Resources menu item: the dropdown's white background makes it a bit hard to distinguish the dropdown panel
    • The three guys with gears in the header image should be around 70% smaller
    • The "Desktop·Mobile·Internet·Social Network ..." text between the header and the menu look like links
    • The "Map" link should be phrased otherwise (something like "Where we are" or "Where Alpha Five Developers make loads of money")
    • The "Map" link should be placed in a more adequate place or position (don't ask me where)
    • It would be nice if the four sections (Software Developers, Product and Utilities, Workshops and Training, Benefits and Discounts) were clickable
    • I'd modify the Benefits and Discounts image (the person holding the big golden dollar coin)

But if you leave it as it is, it's quite OK .

    Regards,
    Felix

      Thanks Felix,

I made most of the changes you suggested and will continue later. I removed the 'gear graphic' because it lost what little relevance it had when the text (bullet points) were removed. A simple slideshow will go in the new naked area to the right of the logo.

        Steve,

        Looks fresh.
If you click on the resources menu item it opens the site in a new tab what is not to be expected.

You should toss out the phone number image and put text - I would also reconsider the layout in regards to mobile devices and tablets. Several text areas bleed outside of the lines, and I think it is oober important to get this right. Yes I used the word "oober"

Also the map, shows up on hover over "where are they" and that should be tossed replaced with a simple link - no need to get fancy, a map is a map - and it doesn't appear to work.

Hope you do not get discouraged, keep up the good work!

Thank you. If i use text for the phone number bots will scrape it and add it to their spam call list. Mobile view is coming to the IADN and my AlphaToGo site as a complete overhaul soon. I found it to sketchy to selectively add responsive web features to an existing site so the whole layout will be changing to a "responsive grid" and "stacked blocks". These are the modern sites where the color runs full screen and the whole website, or most of the website, is on one page.

Re: IADN website face lift - critique

I still say screw the bots - make the phone number mobile accessible. Create a Google voice number (free btw) and put that there. Google voice transcribes the voice mail to text reasonably well and then you can test your theory on how important it really is to avoid the bots vs having an easy way to contacting you. Frankly I think the fact that there is captcha everywhere - that isn't working should prove quite readily that your number can be picked up from an image just as easily by bots as text. The only real difference is that your basing your site on bots and not people...I say make it text, make it for humans, and make it clickable!

Personally if I look up a phone number on the web for any business and I cant click on their phone number I just go to another website...lol

Call me stupido but I believe I am like many others - lazy and eager to click things instead of actually having to remember or write.

You can keep those customers. Customers hire me for my value, not because i am initially easy to get hold of. I don't even really like the telephone number there and am experimenting.

Experiment is over, I removed the telephone number from the IADN website. If I were an order-taking business it would make sense, but it does not appear to make sense as the opening method for contacting my organization.
