Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Counting unique combination of multiple fields in a Report

    Hello,

    I've asked this question before but I am still having issues accomplishing this goal. I'm trying to write a report on the desktop side that will count the unique combinations of three fields in my table. so far I've come up with this but it does not work:

    count(Inst1 =" '" +Inst1+ "' " .and. Location =" '" +Location+ "' " .and. Course_Start_Date =" '" +Course_Start_Date+ "' " .and. Unique_Key_Value())

    I'm trying to get this number to show up under a group band I've created called Course_Name.

    Can anyone help me out here?

    Re: Counting unique combination of multiple fields in a Report

    tablecount("yourtablename","Inst1 = '" +Inst1+ "'.and. Location = '" +Location+ "' .and. Course_Start_Date = {" +dtoc(Course_Start_Date)+"} .and. unique_key_value()")

    I'm trying to imagine if this would be easier with a sample of your table to experiment. Nah, that would probably be too easy. More fun to just guess.

    I don't believe count() accepts a filter.

      How do I get you a sample of my Table?

        count() will work but it depends on the order of the data being set properly.

        As noted by Stan, guessing is not the way to proceed.

        From the control panel, zip the table/set that the report is based on. Hopefully there is a small amount of data. Keep confidential info out. This may require you to build an example with specific data in it..

          Start a new reply, use the Go Advanced button, scroll down to Manage attachments. Upload and insert a zipped sample of your table.

          Meanwhile, you can easily add an index to your table with the expression

          Inst1+Location+Course_Start_Date

          and specify unique records only.

          With such an index, called say "a" you can create a calculated field for a report yield the unique combinations with

          cnt = table.current().index_primary_put("A").records_get()

          Such a count will be relative to the entire table, not to any report grouping.

              Had to take a different tack as I now see you wanted unique records related to the current course name on the report. You probably said that, just took looking at it to comprehend.

              You can download and unzip to a separate location than your current database. This zip contains its own database. Hope it works for you.

                FYI,

                for some reason the dates disappeared on that zip file, but I would like the report to count the unique instances between (Inst1+Location+Course_Name). Also for some reason the field names got shortened up???

                  So this is what I got out of that Zip file, the string I was looking for is this right?

                  line_count(table.external_record_content_get("courses","courses_id","inst1+location+course_sta","course_nam = "+quote(course_nam)+" .and. unique_key_value()"))

                    Re: Counting unique combination of multiple fields in a Report

                    Correct. You'll have to verify but my testing says that works. You referred to course_start_date but the table I received only had course_sta. If your actual table has the full course_start_date field name you'll have to change that in my expression.

                      Yes, I changed it to the correct names and all seems to be working fine. Thanks again!

                      Is there any materials you can recommend I read to further my knowledge in writing these filters? I try using Alphapedia but the verbage on there is sometimes difficult to understand...

                        Re: Counting unique combination of multiple fields in a Report

                        I'm afraid practice and problem solving are the best I can recommend. You didn't mention which version of Alpha your're using but with V11 the inline documentation, not much different than the wiki, is much easier to navigate. The trick lies in realizing that there isn't always a single function that will yield what you want. Sometimes you have to have to combine functions wrapping one with another to arrive at the result you want.

                        Table.external_record_content_get() with unique_records_only() in the filter, ordered as you indicated, merely provides a list of unique values. Line_count() supplies the count of those values.

                        Some folks want to search the documentation for an answer. When you can spare the time spend some just wandering through it. I recommend starting with the links under List Processing Functions and Character Functions because much of what you will want to do can be built on those. Prior knowledge of what is available to you will cut down on frustration.

                          Just a quick question, Now that Ive added that filter you showed me, my report takes about 2 minutes to generate... Is that normal?

                          Also if I wanted to add a "Grp" band to this filter where would I put that? For example I want the count to restart after each Location change.

                            Re: Counting unique combination of multiple fields in a Report

                            Table.external.......... doesn't accept a group parameter. It resets itself based on the filter.

                            If you add a group to the report inside the course name group then you would change the filter accordingly. Otherwise there is no location group.

                            If you do that then, not working on the test database at the moment but from memory, I think the expression is

                            line_count(table.external_record_content_get("courses","courses_id","inst1+course_sta","course_nam = "+quote(course_nam)+" .and. location = "+quote(location)+" .and. unique_key_value()"))

                              See if this speeds up the report generation

                              Total_presentations = line_count(table.current().record_content_get("courses_id","inst1+location+course_sta","course_nam = "+quote(course_nam)+" .and. unique_key_value()"))

                              This is based on the original question, not the location grouping.
