Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there any value in having touchscreen for desktop dev

Intro : My N/Book does not like pomegranate juice spilt over
Deduction : I need a replacement notebook. 95% of my admin work and dev is done on it. NOW !
Conundrum : In my price range I can get for example either
a lenovo with touchscreen with Pent 2020 (2300 benchmark) OR
a Toshiba no touch with Pentium I5 4200 (3317 benchmark) similarly equipped - almost 50% performance up at 5% more cost

For desktop app development is there ANY perceived advantage working with touchscreen at the cost of quality and speed.
(my very dead notebook was adequate for the purpose with an I3 M380 (benchmark 2200) so that is my own benchmark.

Heck, even for web development, I don't see much of a benefit in a touch screen.

I have a Dell Precision M6600 that has a touchscreen (in my case, the touchscreen was actually a better deal) and I never use it. I can't think of any circumstances where I even wanted to use it except to play with when I first got the computer.

    YMMV, of course.

It might be nice to have touch screen for testing, but other than that???

Touch screens have been used in applications such as retail and food services industries for years. If you are developing for those industries I could see the newer touch technology being very useful.

So I guess it depends on what you are developing for.

              Thanks Dave - I agree
Richard - for desktop touchscreen apps a mouseclick is easy enough to test with.

summary: appears to not be any evidence to favor making any concession elsewhere for touchscreen in developing.
From a user POV especially with limited screensize sweeping screen strokes are easier.

As you know Ray, I have desktop dev machine, I5, 8 gig, plus SSD for the programmes to launch.
The Laptop is an I3 4 gig standard disk.
Once it is running, the LT is fast enough.
The DT can be operational in 20 seconds from boot up with Win7.
LT takes a couple of minutes.
Personally I prefer speed, and I am unconvinced about touch screens. SIRI is coming along fast and I use it in Google searches, so I suspect it will be voice centric soon.
I have an idea how to use SIRI for building tables, but I still have a pile of ironing to finish.

Yep Ted agreed. After all the opinions expressed here hands down the winner is not to sacrifice speed for touch - only relating to computers, it's not good relationship advice.
Now I am going have to research what the heck SIRI is, or is it one of your acronyms.

Robin, I am a bit like an old dog who chases cars as far as fast women are concerned.
I forget what I'm supposed to do if I catch one!
