Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sounds great. How well did the Alpha Web App Server run on this vps?

Alpha apps have been placed on smarterasp.net and did work. This one is untested as yet, to my knowledge.
Note: Remember it is up to the developer to set it up. It is cheap, but you do all the work yourself.
      To me, it should work.

People come to this forum all the time looking for less-expensive hosting solutions. This is my personal opinion, but I think if you are going to post some alternative, especially a super cheap alternative, that you should test out running the Alpha web server on it yourself, rather than expecting us to go pay money to purchase a hosting plan to discover it ourselves.

If you are looking server for testing purposes then EC2 m1.small on demand server is unbeatable choice.

If you do not run it you do not pay.
So the price if you use it :

12 hours per day is linux 16.9 win 27,00
          8 hours linux 11.28 win 18,00
4 hours per day then cost is linux 5.64 win 9,00 per month (30 days)

If you need the server say just for 4 hours to test something the cost is totally linux 0,188 win 0,30 . Then you can kill the server.

This m1.small server runs Was without any problems also in production.
EC2 has built in firewall that you can configure as you wish.

FWIW, I think that is a little unfair Steve. How often have the members of this Forum worked with Alpha carrying out testing after purchase?
Dave's comment refers to experiences using a different toolkit, so maybe that is what rankles. However, with the new version (sometime) of Alpha running with IIS and not requiring any additional server software - it used to be known as a WAS - I think the idea is sound and cheap.

If my memory serves me correctly, the toolkit being used has an offering of a Cloud based service where the apps can be tried out free for a year, and you can build and kill the servers as you wish to test everything out.
It's a pity Alpha don't offer something similar.

As for me, I am off in the other direction and looking at creating my own Private Cloud Server environment where I can explore the experiences which Preston had running DT apps over the internet using the Cloud as a repository.
If my ideas go belly up, I will still have loads of storage, locked down cloud based access to documents, share capability for family cloud data, video streaming and a more robust backup system where I can use RAID if I choose to. (Probably not). I would be able to host small web sites to showcase my apps, and it's all my fault if it works or doesn't. Call it a voyage of discovery.

              1. There is a ? mark at the end of the title to post.
              2. There is a 30 day money back guarantee
              3. It costs 6.95 per month
              4. I have gone through 90% of the content and see not reason to discount the ability to run alpha.
              5. When we find something that can possibly be beneficial to all, why not share it.
              6. There is not a problem from me about Steve's beliefs or thoughts. We don't agree on all fronts and now we can just add one very small one. Not a problem here. We also agree on many more fronts.

Dave - thanks for the post. I use SmarterAsp and I am very happy with it, but I can see where people/developers would be interested in low cost VPS offerings. I will take a look at it you never know if and when I may have a use for one. Who knows maybe someone will give it a try and give us a review.

As you might expect, I am doing an evaluation of Webkeepers. So far, and this is off-topic, they charged my cc but insist that my order is not paid and I am waiting to speak to their accounting department to get past that hurdle. But that of course is not what I am going to evaluate. But just for starters in the you get what you pay for department, take a look at the attached image. This is their record for my Payment Method (so they can charge me for my subscription, no problem there); but take a look at the image of my payment method -- do you see anything wrong with their permanent record of my credit card on file? Hint it is a SERIOUS problem and a violation of their agreement with all credit card issuers.

I once read Visa's agreement with its processors so that I could "know the rules of the road". I'm sure AMEX's is about the same. AMEX could shut them down for that.

Thanks for checking it all out steve. It has been check by a couple others with success. However, This was posted in the hope that other alpha users can benefit. You are the one forging ahead with the alpha testing, so I am sure we all will get a good, solid report soon.

For others, this is not a managed vps. They give basics like if you put up a windows server on your own computer. You have to do the installs and configurations yourself. The people there do not(and they say it up front) help you with your configurations or software problems. You do get complete root access just like your own server on your own computer would have.

As far as the credit cards rules, I do not know. I have credit cards on file with 3 hosting companies where they auto renew the 12 domains and 7 hosted accounts as well as PayPal. I can make a purchase with paypal and they directly pull from my credit card.

I have account with a full service VPS (cirrushosting.com), took a look at their format, see the pic, I myself erased the sensitive info. I have been with them for 3 years; they have been around for many. My point is either they all are in violation of something, or nobody is in violation of anything.

FWIW #2: It is clearly stated in Webkeepers docs (I read it myself) that purchases made on WEs will not be processed until Monday to avoid fraudulent purchases. Cirrushoting has exactly the same policy.

FWIW #3: I made my purchase 2 weeks ago on a Friday around 9am PT: 1) they shortly after sent me an email saying that my acct will be active only after they verify my payment, 2) Shortly after they did call me at work to verify my CC info. Early afternoon I got an email with my IP address and was able to access my VPS.

                          $7/mth for a Windows server 24/7, ..... EC2???

                            Re: Cheap vps?

Without a doubt, storing the CVV in a database is against policy for all credit card issuers. Its a holiday weekend here, but I will report these two hosting companies on Tuesday. I've done it before and the credit card companies do follow through, so does PayPal when their merchant policies are violated. The hosting companies are using ParallelsPanel to manage their subscriptions. Although I do not use ParallelsPanel, their recent document says they "used to store sensitive credit card information but the current version does not". I don't know that from experience, but is is on their website.

Here is the info from AmEx site on CVV (they call it CID):

For security purposes, the CID must only be retained until an authorization response is received. Immediately following receipt of the CID validation/authorization, it must be deleted and must not be stored in any system or printed on any document.
Here is a comment on a payment gateway's about why CVV is so useful:

Both types of CVV codes can help reduce credit card fraud dramatically, thus helping merchants avoid potential retrievals and reduce chargeback fees. When used properly, the codes can help stop breached or fraudulent transactions from being processed. And since regulations prohibit merchants from storing CVV2 codes in their databases, consumers don't have to worry about providing the codes to merchants, since card numbers (if lost in a security breach) would be much less useful to thieves without them.
Even though this discussion is still off-topic, are you still comfortable with giving these companies your credit card info? Those of you who have accounts with them, are you going to call and ensure your CVV value is removed?

Let me see. Since PayPal keeps the information, does that mean somebody could shut down PayPal?
                              I don't think so.
However, a credit card like company amex may discontinue doing business with them.
It would probably hurt amex more than the PayPal and that does get weighed in business whether we ever get privy to it.

I have had one incident where a company charged me 2 times for one purchase in 15 years of purchasing online and once where a company billed me and took money unauthorized for a supposed subscription. Both got handled quickly. No, I really don't have a problem with that.
