Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic Function - SQL syntax

    I am trying to retrieve the Identity value for a record I just inserted into a SQL database. The Xbasic Function is being called from an Action Button on a Dialog box so the e.lastIdentityValue will not work. I have been trying retrieve the value by executing a SQL command but that is where I get stuck. The following is my code:

    dim conn as sql::Connection
    dim rs as sql::ResultSet
    dim sqlcommand as c
    dim recordcount as n

    conn.Open("::Name::cn_xxxxx")

    sqlcommand = "SELECT MAX(pk_id)from tableName"
    conn.Execute(sqlcommand)
    rs = conn.ResultSet
    recordcount=rs.data()

    Usually the column name from the table goes inside the brackets next to rs.data. As the SELECT MAX(pk_id)from tableName does not have any columns specified, it simply errors out.

    Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tim Barker

    Does the database have a last id function that can be called to give the last id used?

      I am running SQL Server 2008 R2 and the column in the table (pk-id) the primary key and is also auto generated when a new record is inserted into the table (IS IDENTITY = Yes). I'm not sure of the SQL command to get this value or how Xbasic can reference the returned value.

          It appears scope_identity() will return the last inserted identity. But how is it addressable in Xbasic? Meaning I now have these statements in the Xbasic function:

          dim insertedPKID as n

          conn.Open("::Name::cn_vending_prod")

          sqlcommand = "Insert into CSF_HEADER (created_by) Values ('timbarker')"
          sqlcommand1 = "select insertedPKID = Scope_Identity()"
          conn.Execute(sqlcommand)
          conn.Execute(sqlcommand1)

          The record is inserted into the table but the value of insertedPKID (which should contain the value of the Identity column) is 0 and not the record number of the just inserted record. How can I make the Scope_Identity value accessible in the Xbasic function?

            Re: Xbasic Function - SQL syntax

            I just found the answer on another post. The code to get the newly inserted record value is as follows:

            sqlcommand = "Insert into CSF_HEADER (created_by) Values ('timbarker')"
            sqlcommand1 = "select Scope_Identity()"
            conn.Execute(sqlcommand)
            conn.Execute(sqlcommand1)
            rs=conn.ResultSet
            insertedPKID = rs.data(1)

            After these commands execute, the insertedPKID variable contains the newly inserted record value.

            Thanks for all your help. You definitely helped by pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated.

                      Thanks for your code.

                      I use the following to return the last used ID; and I think it would work for you.
                      Perhaps with the benefit of only executing a single SQL statement.

                      dim conn as sql::Connection
                      conn.Open("::Name::DatabaseName")
                      conn.PortableSQLEnabled = .t.

                      'store the Operation List ID of the appointment selected
                      dim opListID as N
                      opListID =convert_type(e.datasubmitted.OpListID, "N")

                      'Now find the last appointment entry for that operation
                      dim args as sql::Arguments
                      args.add("opListID", opListID)
                      dim sqlOperationID as c
                      sqlOperationID = "select max(ID) from appointmentlist where operationlistID = :opListID"

                      flag = conn.execute(sqlOperationID, args)

                      dim maxOperationID as n
                      maxOperationID = conn.resultset.data(1)

                        Re: Xbasic Function - SQL syntax

                        Are you using conn to insert? or is this happening on a grid event like onBeforeSQLCommandExecute?

                        Regardless, connection objects have a LastInsertedIdentity() method used like this (handle elses however you want)

                        Code:
                        if conn.open("::name::conn") then
                           if conn.execute("INSERT INTO faketable (fakecol) VALUE (1)") then
                                    dim newpk as N=conn.LastInsertedIdentity()
                                    'insert related records here etc
                           end if
                           conn.close()
                        end if

                        In certain grid events you can use the e.cn object to call the LastInsertedIdentity()

                        Hope this helps someone.

                          Hi Tim,

                          Check my article as: Create Unique Invoice Number in SQL. It will discuss how to get the Identity record for MS SQL 2014 and below. In addition, Do not use the MAX() command to get the highest number, since it may be the wrong number and see details in that article I just mentioned.
