Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Anywhere Vs Qt Project

Does anyone have experience developing business aps using the Qt project environment? I stumbled on Alpha Anywhere and it seems to be the perfect fit for what I want to do: develop business applications utilizing SQL Server as the back-end database. I have quite a bit of experience working with MS Access, and Alpha presents itself as the logical step forward. If I commit to Alpha, I would like to do so without second guessing my decision. The Qt project seems to be powerful, and versatile, while I think Alpha is particularly targeted towards developing business applications, which is all I am interested in.

Can anyone offer their educated opinion on this?

    Thanks!

    Hello Chris,
    Welcome to the forum.

I dont' know about the Qt Project, other than checking out their web site, but I can say that you can't go wrong with Alpha. Download the free trial and give it a go. If you have questions, post them here. There are lots of very helpful folk on here that are more than happy to help. You will also find several regular posters who have made the switch from Access without looking back.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I was beginning to think I committed a faux pas by mentioning another platform. I was just looking for reassurance that my time will be well invested in learning Alpha as opposed to other possible solutions.

I have downloaded the trial and am watching a bunch of videos before I dig in. The more functional possibilities I learn that Alpha is capable of, the more bewildered I become. How long does it take to gain a reasonable proficiency with Alpha? I know it would vary with previous experience, but can you offer a ballpark?

When you have AA open, click on the 'Help' menu, then choose 'Video Finder'. You can search for a video by typing any word into the search box and a list of videos with that word in the video description will appear. View the getting started videos. You will find the very informative, to say the least. Spend some time there, especially on those for the grids as that will be your first venture into AA. The UX component videos are also very informative but my suggestion is to work with the grids first.

        Hope this helps

Alpha is very versatile to say the least. But it is also a complex product with a billion features. So there is a serious learning curve for sure. As an Access user you should have no trouble adapting to Alpha judging by the reports of other Access users who moved to Alpha. And this message board will help you tremendously.

Thank you all for your replies.

The more videos I watch, the more awestruck I am of Alpha's capabilities.
I see myself posting many questions as I go forward.

Chris, as you climb the learning curve, remember to reach back and help others who are following along behind you. It's what makes this message board so great.

There is always the "Well, what do you know about that help". That happens when a question is asked that someone else finds very useful. Perhaps not right away but even years later when the message board is searched, your question is found and the answers are just what the person needs. The moral of the question? No question is unworthy, no matter how basic or simple the issue is.

In Qt project the QML seems very interesting. This kind of solution would make life much easier also in Alpha. Using json syntax to configure and modify components would make things faster to do and easier to handle, update and copy.

I've used Qt, but for cross-platform desktop development. Not cross-mobile development. It was 1000% better than using Visual Studio. And if you're into C++ cross-platform DLL Hell development, it's the sauce.

I see that their mobile development version uses MDL. It's 100% likely that their mobile development is all code since it requires make files. You'll likely have to build everything from the ground up. They give you APIs. You still have to implement the forms, logic, and connect the APIs together to make them do whatever.

In general if your using A5 on a daily basis the roadmap 2015 is clear , there is bunch of stuff out there like Node, Mongo, Angular etc, it will service and harvest A5 in community strength. m2p

We must remember that Alphas roadmap was announced before Microsoft announcing Open Source of .NET core framework, .NET core distribution for Linux/OSX.

I would think that situation has now changed also in Alpha or at least they are thinking this new opportunity. Soon .NET developer can with Microsoft fully support develop also for Linux and Mac and .NET will run also in Linux servers (just Mono now). Adopting .NET was big move from Alpha in version 11(10) and now I would imagine it is more attractive than ever.

It's the Core is Net what will run on any y platform but what i understand that the serverside code now writing in Xbasic will be moved in time Javascript so the Alpha Webengine and client side is all to become JS with Google V8. Further MS says it's now Opensource but A5 will not [ why should they?] anf for most people using A5 now there happy so why change swap and lose all your investments.
