Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Installer issues

I'm having issues with the Alpha update installer and today's builds.

When I run the installer, it says it needs to be updated. I press the update button and it goes through the process and returns to the update required screen.

I was able to run an older installer and it updated Application Server but errored out when trying to update the developer version.

When I run the updated Application Server, it generates an error on one of my grids. I then tried to revert it back to the last safe build, and the installer crapped out.

Is there anyway to return to yesterday's build? Now that we can't save the downloads I was forced to go back to my last saved download file which is several weeks old.

Are the temporary installation files saved somewhere by the new installer so they may manually be run?

Is the Universal Installer now the only way to install a pre-release/ Nightly Build?

I can still get the official release files by downloading them, as has always been the case.

I have been having trouble with the Universal Installer. I cannot get it to work correctly, so I took some notes as I progressed through my efforts this morning:

    First try - I installed the latest pre-release Build 6969- 5519.
It worked but I could not connect to the development server.
That never happened before when I installed from the downloaded file a5v12_full_patch.exe.
    So I reinstalled 6699-5464 using a5v12_full_patch.exe.
Still could not connect to the development server.
I discovered that it had changed the port in the development server. I set it to the correct port so that solved the connection problem.
I then attempted to use the Universal Installer to install the latest pre-release Build 6969- 5519.
It said there was already a product installed in that folder and gave me an option to overwrite, which I selected.
The installer ran for about one second and said it was successful.
But it had not done anything. the installed version was still 6699-5464.
So I attempted to use the Universal Installer to install an earlier version, 6948.
This time it did go through the installation routine.
But now Alpha does not launch from C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere\alpha5.exe. Opening the file does nothing.
The Universal Installer reports the installed version is 6945
Again I attempted to use the Universal Installer to install an earlier version, 6948.
This time it went through the installation, although it hung on downloading the zip file for about 10 minutes.
The Installer reported "Installation finished successfully".
The Installer reported the installed version is still 6945, not the version 6948 I selected to install.
I launched Alpha from the Launch button in the installer.
This time it launched, and the version launched is 5464.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere\alpha5.exe
So I searched C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere for alpha5.exe and it found 2 files:
Open one of them does nothing, but opening the other launches Alpha build 6948-5513.

    Just to recap:
The Launch button in the installer launches 6699-5464
One of the alpha5.exe files launches 6948-5513.
