Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Personal Use Only - Is Alpha overkill

I'm bombarded with marketing emails from Alpha over the years as I purchased a desktop version many, many years ago but didn't take it anywhere. So, this week I've perused the Alpha site reading up on what products/versions are available, thinking I might give it another go.

From memory, one of the issues from years ago is that I couldn't deploy a desktop application on a computer in which I didn't have administrator rights. I'm not deploying or writing applications for profit, merely personal use. As I receive the marketing emails with forever reducing prices, I'm wondering if Alpha software is suitable for personal use.

I want to write personal applications, convert some already written in other languages, to be all browser interface based. I'm assuming these could all be run locally on a single PC, but a web browser being the front-end interface. Can such an application be transferred/installed to another computer to be run locally. Will I need administrator rights to achieve this? (The backend data residing locally, not networked or internet connected)

You can run your app in localhost from the developer. I'm thinking the license says you are allowed to deploy on two machines simultaneously (but I've never read the license). If you create a WCD app (web components on the desktop) you can run the app straight from the developer like any desktop app w/o the need for a browser. Otherwise you would have to buy a WAS license. Sounds like that is what you don't want.

If you are not going to put your apps on the internet, you can develop as a desktop and share to other computers in your network using the runtime. They would not show up in the browser though.
You will experience a few issues with needing administrator to install and sometimes other stuff will pop up, but they are not usually deal breakers.
Going desktop will be faster to develop and will run faster in my opinion.

I have upgraded to V11. I was running V9 it seems forever, for my personal use. It has, and is serving me well. The transition from V9 to V11 is seamless.
The best feature of V9 and newer is the ability to use multiple back end formats. Mysql, Accses, etc. Personally the built in db# suits me fine. I don't think I will exceed
2 billion records. Although you must update indexes and pack tables for efficiency. (Even small tables) This can be programmed within the application.

I am talking like a salesman... Hey! Would you like to buy my V9? No reasonable off will be refused.

If you are interested. Make an offer in US$. I will contact my salesman to ensure it is all in the up and up.

Yes, They used to offer some pretty good deals on the other program versions. However at the time I really wasn't in need for it. My contact with the program was via another person tracking their sales. Things changed, and I decided to see about actually purchasing it for myself. The way it's priced now pretty much puts it out of my reach.

Since you had the program registered for your system , is that legal?

If Alpha were to approve it, then it is legal.

I have done web development in Alpha and other platforms. It all comes with a certain amount of overhead that in my opinion makes it overkill for any personal use databases. If want to develop something for person use and don't need or can do without access from mobile devices I think the Alpha Desktop development is the way to go.
Version 10.5 was the last to see any major improvements on that front. In the past version 11 was still available on there website at a significantly lower price. I don't see it listed but maybe if you give them a call.

Yes, I just want to make something for the desktop.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll contact them. Even if the person selling his copy of Version 9 were to still have it, I read something saying it won't work with Win 7. So I would have to have to dig up an XP system to even run it.

I've been using Version 9 with Windows 7 for a few years. Works just fine.

Good deal, I may contact the person to see if he still has the software.
