Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Plaudits for the Alpha Bootstrap Starter Kit

Okay I took the plunge early and purchased Steve's starter kit. Even though I am capable of producing/editing/updating style sheets I do not consider it to be my strength so it would take me far longer to do than someone well versed and working with css all the time.

A while back, through a business associate I had some basic work done on a style sheet by a lad fresh out of college having studied in this area. The results were good and I have given serious consideration to contracting him to develop a full "house style" for my business. However my concerns were that he does not know Alpha so I would end up paying for him to learn the nuances of the product to allow him to build the new style.

Then along came Steve who took the plunge to put together his starter kit! Now I am sure many had the same thoughts that I had! ie: We have seen promises before ......etc etc but I was encouraged by the postings and with a real business need to have some modern professional looking styles for several applications soon! I signed up!

There were still some gaps, mainly around panel navigators and list controls but Steve has continued to develop the product and is rapidly covering these areas.

With Alpha making such rapid developments with the product the styling has lagged behind although I have no doubt that at some point this will be corrected, however I have a business to run and like it or not clients do look at the styling and my needs are now.

I have found it very straightforward to integrate the kit into an existing application and today one of my clients had a first peek and were suitably impressed.

If you have needs for a styling update definitely recommend checking it out. And no I am not on commission :-)

I share Glen's opinion regarding the outstanding work Steve has done on the Bootstrap Starter Kit. I just released a project based on the the template.....it is using one of the Tabbed UI styles that is included in the kit. So far the site is getting good reviews and the system has run smoothly. Here are some screenshots

The site uses conditional images/formatting to make it simple for users to register and submit proposals to present at our conference.

I have found Steve to be very fast at responding to questions and does a great job of supporting the project. He does understand that list controls are the future compared to grids and tabbed UIs and is working quickly to add full support for those in the kit.

No....I am not on commission either :)

Re: Plaudits for the Alpha Bootstrap Starter Kit

I have done a lot of customization to the alpha style sheets, so much so that applying another style only serves to confuse me - however I also purchased and think he is doing a wonderful job. I purchased more to support the effort than to actually use it BUT I sure can appreciate how very nice and clean your site looks.
I remember being asked what a "modern" style would look like if Alpha were to develop one. I replied, I cannot describe it per se but I would sure know it if I saw it!

Charles...thanks for your kind words. Most of the credit goes to Steve....the Bootstrap styling sure makes it easy to bring a more modern look to Alpha.....something I have been wanting to do for years, but lacked the CSS knowledge to make it happen......now I don't have any excuses!

Re: Plaudits for the Alpha Bootstrap Starter Kit

Four separate clients have now seen the style and without exception they have all passed the same positive comments: Very clean, business like, easy on the eye to work with. The end users are critical to win over because they are the ones working on the system all day and one said to me this morning that "they love it!".
