Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Where to begin

    Hello,

I'm a complete noob when it comes to Alpha Anywhere. What I've seen so far is impressive, but for my immediate needs, I'd like to use it as a replacement for FoxPro 9. Does AA provide any interactivity such as that provided with the FoxPro command window?

    Thanks,
    Oscar

    Re: Where to begin

Alpha developer has an "interactive window" where you can test out most functions and xbasic (Alpha's programming language). They also have a "Preview" where you can launch your component in a local space using a debug window, or chosen browser, evaluate, debug, etc.

      Hi Oscar,
You will miss the command window and the browse command :)
AA is a good replacement to vfp but there is a certain learning curve..
For the "immediate need" I heard that LIANJA use the same language as VFP but I didn't like it..

      Regards,

      Paul

          Hi Paul,
Could you be more specific? I just took a look at a few of the beginner videos and Lianja looks pretty simple to develop in.

          What didn't you like?

            Lianja?, not really
Most of us have passed it over. But again, each to his own.

And you passed it over because...?

                Re: Where to begin

Moving to a new environment is always going to have a learning curve, no matter what platform you use.

I think the real question is: What is the application that you are moving from foxpro 9? If we knew that and what you expect to do with it, we might be able to better advise you.

                  Re: Where to begin

Did not consider it ready to go at the time. No one in our group gave it a go after a few tested some of it out.
There is better out there including Alpha.

It is no secret that I don't use alpha for the web, but it was after searching many platforms and deciding on one that explicitly met my needs for my business. 1st thing for me was, it needed to work on Linux because most of my stuff is on Linux. The 25 people in our group use a mixed bunch of platforms. You would be surprised what can go from one platform to another. 3 of the group are avid alpha users for the web. Some use it depending on the job they need it for.

I do use alpha for the desktop exclusively and have for many years. Found nothing better to date. Many in our group do the same.

So, not trying to knock or expound on anything unless reports on one are just not good.

I will not give a list on here with ratings. I have done that before and it was frowned on. I really don't blame them either.

If it comes to a helpful utility, I try to offer it up.

Moving from FoxPro, Alpha is as natural as it gets. There is certainly a learning curve as Larry stated.

                      Re: Where to begin

Clipper/clipper87 is still around too and it was far superior to FoxPro in speed, strength and all other, but the newer offerings cost a lot and are really not the same.
Clipper was as close to C as it could be without being C.
