Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Change the Hierarchy of a Record

So I have a database for debate. I have multiple speech records each containing speech points. I am updating those to the speaker record.
I would like to rank in order by highest points who of all the records has the first, second, third place etc. I know that I can do this with a report. But I would like a field in the speaker that is constantly being updated.

    Ideas?

And where is it that you are having a problem? You are updating those to the speaker record already, no?

is it that you want to order the speakers in some view in rating order, other tan report?

Sorry, my explanation was lacking. I have 4 speakers in a round. I am updating their points as each speech occurrs. However, I would like it to rank each speaker based on total points after each speech. For example after the first 4 speeches (total of 10) it would tell me their ranking so far in the round. When the next speech occurs the ranking would change for everyone because that speaker technically has more points. Baiscally a field in the speaker dbf would be updated after each speech that would say ranking: X. That X would change each time. Thus on each record I would see where the speaker is actually ranked.

Wherever you are "updating their points as each speech occurrs" an easy but inelegant way would be to create a browse on that table sorted by the field.
When updating however that is, you can trigger that browse to refresh().
Knowing nothing about what you are doing, how and where, I'm assuming it is one table with a records for each speaker. Pure guesswork.

You should post queries in the category specific to the version of A5 you are using, not general questions would also help, and explain your scenario with what you have done and where you are stuck.

I can move this thread to the proper forum if you tell me what you are actually using.

You have a table Speaker linked on to many with a table of Speeches?

          1. posting field rule on the speeches that adds the points to the Speaker total field.

          2. Or a variation of this idea... In your case a field on the Speaker table that looks at the data in Speeches

Your system brings back old memories of a debate scheduling system I wrote in 1977 in 10K of memory on an HP3000 machine.
