Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Basic Tutorial for a true beginner?

Alpha Anywhere is impressive but a bit overwhelming for a beginner. I have spent the better part of 2-3 days watching videos and reading but what I'm doing lacks direction. I need a tutorial that progresses in some orderly fashion. I have watched any number of multi-part video, and all where great; but none besides the "Building Your First Web Application" with the Flying Start Genie started from the beginning. Again that was good but at the end it dumped me into the Video Library. Is there a place to continue with the basics in some orderly fashion?

I played with the stuff from the Flying Start Video but can't even figure out how to translate a Description out of another table using the Id (like getting the Product Name to show in a child grid instead of the Sku number.) Like I said, need some basic tutorials.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Carl, I certainly understand your dilemma though I must say that the available training is much improved to what it used to be a few years ago.
Personally I find the videos that you can follow along step by step and create the application at the same time are the best for me. It gets you familiar with the basics of the development environment and how to get things done.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on building a mobile application from start to finish. You can follow along and create it yourself.
    http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/a...eMobileApp.htm
It might not be the application you need to develop, but that's not the point, it gets you familiar with getting things done in Alpha.

I'd also recommend signing up for Dion McCormick's free tutorials at GiantKillerTraining http://giantkillertraining.com/
He is a great Alpha instructor and explains things very clearly.

Is there a better way to gain direction? I'm not sure.

Hi, Carl we are trying to do this at the moment. What is your timescale and how much of a beginner are you?

Alpha is daunting to experienced programmers because of the sheer scope.

Non-Alpha considerations are daunting to the true newcomer.

Our tutorials are aimed at the experienced developer.

Let me know if you want to follow along. They are not developed for production.

          Hi Michael,
As for your question "how much of a beginner are you?": I am a guy who has "played" at programing macros in Excel and such but nothing more than this, so I guess a new beginner. If following along would help in my general education then, YES I would love to tag along. If you think it will only slow me down or confuse me, then I guess not.

          Thank you.

Our training makes assumptions, you understand SQL and have a basic understanding of CSS Html and Javascript. Having said that 90% of the training will show you where things are.

The problem is if you don't understand them.

We have a need for this course, I think it may work for you as we have 2 interns from University who are at your level. They are going to do most of the legwork. The interns are with us for 2 months and then return to University. So if you decide to follow along it will be as we develope the course.

The picture above is the basic elements that form the full stack system. We will try to explain the connection string method and then move onto displaying the data on a page.

As you can see from the above drawing there are many screen sizes and a couple of screen orientations. Most of the course will show how to display and format data in the browser.

My email is [email protected] http://www.datadrivensystems.co.uk/ is our current website.

Drop me a line and I can share some more interesting links.
