Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Dump of all A5 functions

Ever wanted to get a complete dump of ALL the A5 functions available?

The attached code dumps all functions.

Caveat Emptor! Not all functions listed are available for use
    as some are internal functions.

    Hi Melvin,
For what reason would you want to do that?

      Because its there.

      Seriously, though....

One could also make the output a basis for a personal help file/reminder file with notes about things that cause problems for you, etc.

You could cut and paste real life examples from the message boards noting how others use the functions.
      There can be only one.

RE: Dump of all A5 functions

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Seriously though, there are three valid reasons for doing it.
        1. Why not?
        2. Because I/we can.
        3. Quite often A5 has functions/variables embedded that are
not documented/supported but still might be interesting to
use. This is the only way to find them.

However, I will probably not be contributing too much more code in the future. I've notice a bad trend. Every time I post
something, even though a simple thank you would suffice, all I
get is a lot of why or how. Those that don't ask just use
        without any acknowledgment at all.

Those who use ideas, code, etc. that is posted on any of these Alpha message boards should take note. That is definitely a problem. Those who are providing these things are taking their own time to post the code/answers. When nobody says something like, "Hey, I'm using this and it's really been helpful" then we begin to wonder if there was any reason for posting it at all - which means, of course, that we become less likely to post the next thing.

In other words, as my Dad used to tell me, sometimes the most selfish thing you can do is to be nice to others.

          A little soapbox time:
If you'll think about it, this is true in many facets of life. Even in driving (which is where my Dad first pointed it out), the ultimate "selfishness" is staying alive (or you can be less selfish and just worry about keeping your car from getting damaged) and one of the best ways to do it is to make every effort to let the other guy know what you are doing or planning to do so he can avoid you in case you didn't see him or he/she just tries to do something "stupid", for example, if he starts to pass you just as you begin making a left turn into a driveway because you didn't use your turn indicator and he thought you were going to make a right turn into the shopping center - oops! (Of course, then the question is "who was stupid?" - the other guy for trying to pass or you for not using your turn indicator?)

                Melvin,

I think you hit on a 'natural' trend in society - manners and civility are, unfortunately, becoming things of the past. People forget (or just don't care) to say 'thank you' or 'please'.

I won't and can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I appreciate the effort everyone puts forth in posting code and offering help and suggestings. I've found that I have no immediate need for some of that code, but it all is good to have in the 'development toolbag'.

A belated thanks to all who have posted code in the Archive.

My question has been taken all out of context.
I asked the question as to why, because I do not know and wanted to ask for my edification.
To have all this commotion about my question seems abserd to me. I thought we were all trying to help each other with problems, but this has gotten entirely out of hand.
If I offended any one by asking a simple question, then I apoligize. I was just looking for an answer that I could understand.

It started with my asking a question that I honestly did not understand, and the only answer that I have gotten is 1) anger 2) philosiphying (sorry about spelling). I asked the question in all sincerity, and received a hail storm codes of conduct. If I ofended any one I apoligize, but I honestly wanted to know why you would Dump of all A5 functions.

Apology accepted. I believe you question has been answered, but to put it another way, you could ask the same about ANY
A5 function or solution. You may not necessarily have a need
or understand them, but if you do, they are there for your use.

Some people are overly sensitive or have prickley egos. Your question was an honest one and I had the same question when I read the post. And, yes, I too really do appreciate when others post code and functions on the board. Hell, the whole board is nothing more than a mutual help service. Thanks for your question and comments, and thanks to tho others as well. It's all very very helpful.
