Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Transmit a single form, report, etc to remote site

    Hello,

Attached is a zip file containing two scripts. The ObjectExport script will create a small binary file of a database layout object (form, report, letter, label) that can be sent to a remote site and imported using the ObjectImport script. Use of these two scripts is pretty straightforward. The ObjectImport script looks for the binary file in the database directory. There is more info about these routines in the March 2005 issue of the Alpha Newsletter.

Any thought on how to improve these routines?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Jim,

Looks very promising as a new tool. I'm sure I'll use it in the very near future.

One suggestion: Use the extract script to backup the object being replaced on the client's machine in case there is a problem with the new object. Murphy is alive and well.

    Thanks,

Great tool, Jim! I'm about to undertake a makeover of an aging application. Getting the major changes to the user and up and running are routine. I like the hands-on of doing them personnaly on-site. It's all those little "tweaks" that come up later that can be distracting.

A tool like this will make it possible for me to email minor changes to a user and be confident that they will be applied without me having to make a special trip. The quick response will impress the user and the time saved will make my life a little easier.

      Thanks Jim!

        Jim,

As Jerry & Fred intimated, this is a good tool to have in our development tookbox.

        Thanks,

Fred sent me an email asking why I left out browses............ geez ................ I just got coding and forgot about the lowly browse. In the rush to get it done for the newsletter I totally over looked this. All layout objects are the same as far as these routines go. I correct this and post an update.

          Thanks Fred,

Thanks to Fred Zag for pointing out that I left the browse object out. Attached are the corrected scripts that include the capability to transmit browse objects.

            Thanks,

OK, now I'm really impressed. Great product! Fantastic price! User poses question about a possible enhancement and it arrives in his inbox a few hours later. Along with a note thanking him for mentioning it. Can't remember the last time that happened.

And then I think about the "support" I've got over the years for some products I've paid big bucks for? Yup, I'm impressed.

Thanks again, Jim. Now I'll go back and reapply the mods I made to the original version. I sure am glad I did such a good job documenting my changes. :)

I worked with Jim and used his code, but from a slightly different approach. The user will manually install the updates using a ObjectImport code attached to a button on the utilities form. I would e-mail the .ABN files to the user and have them save them to the desktop. Then active the objectimport code.

The code I've attached has not been modified to include the browses yet.

RE: Transmit a single form, report, etc to remote

I went back and changed the code to incorporate browses. When I tested the new script, it didn't work.

Of course this was after I posted it on this board.

As it turns out, the first 'objectImport' script I submitted was the wrong one.

I've attached the correct code now.

Unfortunately, I've discovered another problem. It seems that UI_GET_FILE set up the way I'm using it with version 6 returns nothing if only one file is selected. I'm not sure if this is a bug, but I've submitted my finding to Alpha.

I don't get what I am doing wrong. I copied the code for import and exporting, created a menu item for this. The export works beautifully, but import does nothing. Can anyone show me the way to the light? Thanks.
                    Kevin,
P.S. I do love this. I just need to figure out what I am doing with import.

RE: Transmit a single form, report, etc to remote

                      Hi Kevin,

I had the same problem at first. Had to go in and read the script.

If you place the *.abn file in the exact folder with you database files then run the import it should work. At least that is how it works for me. It is automatic. The import operation just looks for the *.abn file and imports it automatically.

                      Hope this helps.

UPDATE - Nevermind. I was mixing an original Export function with the most recent Import function. When I update both to the most recent; success.

Was any more work done on this needed ImportObject utility? The latest version here has bugs in my test on V8.

                          1) the line if right(word(vFileList,1,crlf()),4) = ".ABN" prohibits the ABN file to be named with and ABN extension.

                          2) the ImportObject process fails to import the object (I tested with a report, w/the update ABN file on the Desktop).

                          3) On failure it leaves a dialog box open "Importing Update Files" which is only removed by shutting down Alpha.

I'm not an xbasic expert, but the intial part of the code makes no sense.

Steve, I incorporated both scripts into one of my application in ver 6 and brought it forward to ver 8 and have no problems with it. It does not have any of the problems you claim to have, works great.
