Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Basic Data Entry Form - Example

Here's a basic data entry form, designed for Alpha Four users migrating to Alpha Five. The user's ability to add, delete, or change records in the table is governed by manipulating the properties of the data entry form itself.

Here's a revised version, with enhancements suggested by Barry Rochford.

    Thanks, Barry!

Aaron Strickland found a glitch in my OnPush event for the Save button.

It's been fixed, and the revised version is attached.

      Thanks, Aaron.

RE: Basic Data Entry Form - Example

Thanks for this example. I wish i had seen this before setting up my system a couple of years ago.

Recently I attended a free microsoft Access seminar - purely for curiousity as the UK HQ is only 7 miles from my house. The thing I enjoyed the most was the demo game of Crimson Skies! (and have since purchased)

Anyway, they were suggesting separate virtually identical screens, maybe just a color and heading different, with one screen being for ENTER, one for EDIT, one for DELETE and one for VIEWING.
On finding a record on the VIEW form, pressing the ENTER or EDIT or DELETE button replaced the the form with the one selected.
Effectively only the colored heading changed, the fields all being in the same place and design.

If you can understand what I mean, do you think the idea is a practical and/or useful to use in A5?

RE: Basic Data Entry Form - Example

          Here's a revised version.

Alex Levy found it possible to keep entering new records without pushing the Save button. This has been fixed.

Robin James suggested displaying something for the user so they'll know what 'mode' they're in. A simple text box has been added to do this.

Lynn Morey suggested having the cursor positioned at end of unselected text, to avoid inadvertant loss of data during edits. This was done by adding simple field rules for each field.

            Tom,
Thanks for the posting. It is always nice to see different ways to do things. Your form has given me some new ideas and a solution to a problem I was having with data entry on one form I have been using.

              Tom

I tried to copy the various scripts to a current system I have set up, so that I can save the users despoiling their own databases by accident.

I had trouble running the script when it seeks to focus the form on a particular field - idnum. I simply changed it to the name of a field in my table. But it keeps on fouling up. Is there a trick to this?

                Peter,
Did you declare the oktosave variable in the form?

RE: Basic Data Entry Form - Example

Congratulations, I downloaded and printed the scripts, and I think it's great. It can be applied to other forms.

Has anybody tested it with forms having embedded browses or sub-forms.

I wonder if the same is available to simulate the DOS Version of Alpha, such as indexes, find, and etch.

I think that printing the scripts with the documentor, can help one to fully understand some of the scripts and how they work.

                  Great job.

I am trying to combine this basic entry form concepts with your passing global variables concepts examples.

                    Thanks for your examples.
