Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bitmap buttons an alternative set

Seeing as its the Weekend and for a change the message board is "alive", unlike the users who have appeared to have "gone to ground" this week.
I decided to put together an alternative set of bitmap buttons for alphaer's to use ( If they like them!!).
All buttons have 48x48 images and I have supplied alternative sizes (36x36, 24x24) to play around with. Bitmap images are 256 colours with #FF00FF (magenta)background so as to allow transparency in A5V8 .Note red is not a good edge colour as it leaves a lot of speckling around image.
There is nothing like a dream to create the future.
    But then again:
Basic research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing and to steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research!

Chris these look cool. I'm a newbie to Alpha, but being an old Clipperhead, I'm blown away at it's power. HOW do I use an 'alternative set of bitmap buttons' in my apps?

    TIA

Extract the zip file. The bitmaplib.alb can be copied to your project folder. In the database properties dialog from the main program menu choose...
      File Database properties
      Database properties... Libraries and add.
This associates the bitmaps with your project.
You can see all the embedded images in the Code tab of the Control Panel
Dblclk on file, shows a preview of image.

Have recompiled zip file. In the original the 36x36 images contained magenta border and not background. Is fixed and have uploaded appended files.
          Note :
While "playing around" Have come across a bug (already sent to alpha). When using a reference to external file in button bitmap definition you cannot edit the path once set. The resulting change gives a blank button instead of the new image. The only work around I have come across is to delete the button and start from scratch ( Dont try this on a coded button )

I have not been able to repeat the bug you describe. I sent you a video of my attempt to reproduce the problem.

                Chris,

This is stellar work!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!! I will be implementing these in my app straight away. This is something I have been struggling with since commercially available icons are not set up with the proper background to show as transparent in Alpha.

I did not see the recompiled zip file you mention though. Any chance you could repost it here?

                Thanks again!

Hi Chris, did you repost the recompiled file? These are great!
