I know it is possible to have two separate embedded browses on a single form with both browses based on the SAME table, each with SEPARATE record pointers. Is it possible, however, to separately query each browse individually (still on the single form)? I know I can't use the query functions built into the main menu, as it would try to query the header records for both browses at the same time.

For example, with a simple invoice Set (header 1:M detail), if the set has the header table and detail table repeated, I can have separate record pointers to each browse, but could I query detail records from two different invoices, one in each browse?

Trying to find a way to show different queried records from the same table, on the same form, so that I can have the user select records from each browse, and then be able to "swap" field data between records.

It sounds like you want a form that would simulate having 2 browses to the same table open next to each other. You might try making a header table with a 1 character field filled with "X". Add a similar field to the browse table and update the field in all the records to populate with "X" too. Then you can create a set where you link the same table twice to the header on that field 1:N. I don't know how well a filter or query might work on the child tables, but you should be able to scroll each browse in the form independent of each other.

Thank you for your response. Yes, 2 browses on the same table open on one form. I have a form that will do that now, but I need to query each browse separately.

I am trying to have two different Sales Orders detail records show in each browse so that I can automate a way to have the user select specific records in each browse and then "swap" field information between those specific records (basically swapping Sales Order detail records between Sales Order header records). I can do this by opening separate forms in sequence, query for the Sales Order, select the single record to act upon in each form and then pressing a script button to do the swap. If you have to move alot or records though, it is tedious - be easier to do it on one screen.

Any other suggestions?

Robin gave you the answer. But you don't even need the separate "header" table or the "x". Just create a set w. teh table link ed to itself w. the expression: 1=1

You should then be able to construct separate queries for "both" tables.

Peter - when you say 1=1, you mean place a 1 in the parent linking field and a 1 in the child linking field? The two tables will also be linked 1 to 1 (1:1), yes?

Doing this makes a composite set of the table and its duplicate (with separate record pointer). So far, I am able to query the first instance, but not the second. I have the first table in a browse on a form, and the second copy of the table in a second browse on the form. I have a button near each browse that has code similar to this:

swap_browse:tables:production_order_detail.filter_expression = "job_no=var->search1"
swap_browse:tables:production_order_detail.query()

I must be missing something.

No. The link must be 1:M
Then use a linking expression, not a field.
The expression for both child & parent is: 1=1

Then you should be able to scroll independently and query independently.

Peter,

Well, I got it working. Since I wanted two Browse regions on my "double query" form, I had to create a set with three tables. The primary table was any dummy table, and then attached the first table 1:M and then a copy of the same table to the dummy 1:M. On the linking fields I had to use just (1) in the expression field, not (1=1) and all works well.

I'll try to post a screen shot, but so far I have not been able to get the file under 1Mg.

Didn't realize that using a simple 1 would work. I think (but not sure) that in certain versions of A5, 1 would not work. Neither would "X" or .T. But glad you got what you needed out of it. Yes, A5 is very flexible.
