Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Scottish Names

    Hi all,

I remember that somewhere in Alpha Four there was a summing up of Scottish names. e.g. McClallan, McGregor, McGuire and at lot more.
Usefull for exeptions in capitalizing lastnames.

    Does one know that list?

        Re: Scottish Names

I checked the learn alpha.com link and it is no longer functional for the caps checker -- the alphaforum.com site appears to have been hijacked. I believe Cal used an canwrite event function in conjunction with a database of known names and words to automatically correct commonly mis-capitalized words. I still have the original files or perhaps you can contact Cal if this sounds like what you were looking for.

              Hi Keith,

For the function I wrote I want to check real Scottish names.
I know I've seen them long time (few years) ago.
If you have a list of names I would be very happy.

              Regards

                John and Cliff

Thank you for your help, but the script or code is not the issue.

Long time ago I've seen a list of all Scottish names starting with Mc and Mac.
For testing purposes I (only) need these names.

                Thanks anyway

                  Hi Ton,

If it is just a list of Scottish Names you want then I'm afraid I cant help you.

If it is a script you want to make sure names are capitalised correctly ie MacTavish, please let me know.

                    Ton,

My apologies. Sometimes I read faster than I comprehend. Try this website:
                    http://www.electricscotland.com/webc...phabetical.htm.

You should be able to extract what you need from there.

                      Ton, Cliff,
I saw the website on the mentioned link as well but the names there do not show any capitalization beyond the first letter....but from a few other links on that site I think I found what may do for a basic list....scroll down just a tad to see the list. 1432 names it shows when counted. But only 40 are Mc or Mac . There are also two "Mak" and one M' that are other derivatives of these (actually think the Mak version is the origin).

... not sure these are easily extractable, but caps appear correct!

                          I visited all three internetpages.

Funny, even Scottish people not always capitalize their names (correctly).

With this information I can give it a try.

                          Thank you for your help.
