Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Membership database with education tracking

I have been asked to develop a membership database that can also track continued education for it's members.

I have no problem with the whole membership concept, but where I am stumped is how to track the continued education requirements of this organization.

They receive their credentials when they pass a required test. They can renew for a nominal fee every two years, considering they attend at least two out of four offered continued ed classes during the previous two years.

These classes are offered every April and November and each person has to attend any 2 of the 4 offered for a 2 year period.

I could create a logical field for every continued education test date and track it this way but I'd have to create fields for testing days years into the future and assume these dates will never change.

The only other thing I can think of is to create a memo field and enter the dates each member attends and then when determining who has met their requirements run a query on these dates?

There must be a better way that I am overlooking.

    I'd appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

You probably need a table for continued education/test dates and an intermediate linking table w. member_id and course_id. Then you can link as many courses to as many members as needed. I don't know if you can query inside a memo as you suggest. Even if you can, it would be slow and potentially suspect.

So from your continued education/test dates table. Something along the lines of....(quotes may be slightly off)

      dim filter as c
      filter="betweendate(\"test_dates\",date(),addyears(date(),-2)) .and. member=/"+quote(member)

Could use this to enter a value say in a field that says "Qualified" if
tablecount("test dates", filter)>=2 is True. or just as the filter for a query if that is what is wanted.

Not tested but this is how I would first approach your problem.

Re: Membership database with education tracking

        Mark,
I have a very similar situation where registation of having read a memorandum which must be read by staff members in order for them to be credentialed. The registration of a staff member having read the memo I figured out must be within the memo record itself, within a memo field in the memo table holding the 'signatures' of the staff having read that memo.

For your situation, a table holding each education event would have a memo field, into which the unique identifyer for each member that has engaged in that event would be added. You can filter the table based upon the presence of the members unique identifier (signature) being present within the memo field and generate a logic of their being registered for events within a given time period. It take a bit of coding, but doable. Please let me know if I can help further.

I've attached a test database hoping someone can show me how to link the members with multiple testing dates.

          I really appreciate the help!

              Mark,
attached is a slight variation/addition to what Peter used. It is a bit more complicated, but allows for more views of the members' individual records and as groups.
