Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database install

Hi folks, I need your professional input on this one. I am considering buying the software. I am currently on the 30 day trial one.

My question here is the following:
I have created a database for a small company (as part of my training). They seem impressed and would like it. This database will be run on one PC only.

The software that I need to buy is?
    1) The runtime or application server software
    2) The developer software

I developed the database with web components. I can do it without the web components is that correct?

If I do it with the web components what additional software do I require?
    Appreciate your feedback

    Kind regards
    Macaw

    Re: Database install

If it is desktop only and they don't need the web (or browser based) then you wouldn't use web components, but rather desktop controls - which are more than extensive and are quite comprehensive. So then you would only need the developer's version (for you to develop) & the runtime for the client. If you go the web route you need the developer's version (for you to develop) & a web app server license for the client.

      Re: Database install

Thanks Peter. Just so that I understand this. If I develope with web components and the database will NOT be run on the web, but on the client
s desktop only (not intranet), I get the developer and runtime.

      Is this correct.

And now a total newbie question. When you refer to desktop, I take it that you mean add forms, etc in the control panel only?

      Apologies for these questions.

      Regards

No. If you are creating a "web" app, but we can call it a "browser" app since you don't plan on running it on the web, you need a web app server license - and the app will run in the client's browser.

And now a total newbie question. When you refer to desktop, I take it that you mean add forms, etc in the control panel only?

Desktop means "desktop" forms and browses (as verses a browser) as opposed to web components. In this case you would need an RT for the client.

In either case, you the developer need the developer version.

To confuse matters further, if you purchase on of the "feature packs", you can run a web grid inside a desktop form. And in such a case, you wouldn't need to buy the web license, but would still need the RT.

To understand the desktop side, watch some of these videos here:

          Re: Database install

Thanks. So I only need the dev and app server license if I develop with web components and it will run on the client's pc even without the runtime?

If I choose to go desktop I need the dev and RT.Either way I need the dev license. Does the client need any specific software to enable the web app to run or is there some kind of software inside the app server license to allow this?

          Thanks

Yes, as long as you have built a "web" app.

If I choose to go desktop I need the dev and RT.Either way I need the dev license.

            Right

Does the client need any specific software to enable the web app to run or is there some kind of software inside the app server license to allow this?

The web app server is the software (which I called license) - as long as it's a Window's machine.

              Re: Database install

Thanks for the answers (and your patience). If I have say 4 clients, can I apply the server software to all 4 clients? I watched the videos this morning but in all honesty, I find things a bit difficult. I got the 2 manuals with the 30 day trial that shows how to do web apps and that is what I have learnt, so I will stick to that for the time being.

              Regards

Not really. You need a license for each machine that the WAS (web application server) runs on.

It's difficult at first and gets easier with time and experience.

                  Re: Database install

Wow - that will be expensive. I was under the impression that there was minimal coding involved. I have a problem with the videos as my internet connection is slow. Are there any free training manuals. The 30 day package came with 2 manuals but for web dev only.

Sorry for all these questions. One day, I might be in your position to be able to answer a few :)
