Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Combo box setup question

I am looking to create two combo boxes where the selection in the first effects the contents of what is displayed in the second. For example, if there are mutiple offices when I select an office in combo box 1, when I go to combo box 2 the only choices listed are the names for the office I selected in combo box 1. I have been looking at the help as well as documentation I have and have not been able to find this anywhere not even a genie. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am looking to create two combo boxes
I suppose you are speaking of a desktop rather than browser based application, though it is not specified. I suppose you are speaking of a control on a form rather than an xdialog, though it is not specified. I suppose you are speaking of a Record List - Combo Box rather than a Record List - Edit Combo Box, though it is not specified.

Above the area where you specify the columns in the second combo box there is a checkbox for Enable Filter Expression. Note the object name of the field represented in the first combo box for reference. Edit the second combo box. Choices tab. Check the Enable Filter Expression and press the Edit Filter Expression button. In the top box, Field Expression (in target.... enter an expression in the format of

    field_in_target_table = object_name_of_the_field_represented_in_the_first_combo_box.value

Leave the rest of the entries in the Edit Filter Expression dialog empty. Ok and Ok and save. This should filter the second combo box based on the value selected for the first.
    There can be only one.

George, attached is a sample database demonstrating what you asked. Not exactly as described earlier but close.

          waitvar.zip

Created in V10, not sure what version you're using.

Hi Stan, Thanks for the quick response and the samples. I am not able to open either sample, I get and message document not saved. I am using version 10. I have used Access in the past and have been using Alpha five as it is more powerful and easer to use. Thanks for your help

You are downloading and unzipping my samples? They're compressed to keep everything together and speed transfer.

I just download and unzipped here and they work fine.

If you received a message "Unable to save document" you have a permissions issue with the directory in which you saved the database. It should operate normally even with that message.

or the terminology is to 'Extract All'

                    Then open the extracted files...

I'm guessing that step was missed...
