Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Updating External Data

    Ok, Been working with with Qreporter a few days and have my basic report done. Calculations, totals, etc.

    I've created an external access database to maintain data from the report. I've got it linked correctly and when I use access to enter data the table is being displayed correctly. I'm trying to figure out how to get the report to update this table. I've seen data functions that would accomplish this but I don't see exactly where or how to insert this into the report.

    I've looked at events but those didn't trigger. any examples around to look at??? The tables would be updated based on calculations in the report. some from detail some from group totals.

    Your Access table should be defined as a passive linked table. If it is directly used in the report, when you print or preview the report QRB will ask if you want to refresh the data.

    If you pre-process the data, then you'll script the refresh and pre-processing prior to the report print/preview.

    Welcome to the QRB world. Join the webinar when you can... We love to share ideas about QB reporting there (and here too)

    ps - is the Access table from an existing app or did you build it because you're more familiar with Access? If the former, then build the table in QRB and you'll have everything in one place... ( and easier to use for the user)

    If not, carry on...

      Thanks, I chose access cuz it was quick and easy. I can easily change to QRB. I assume the pre-processing is done via the report onprintinit and exit events? Will start working with that.

      --Thanks.

        Or you can use the scripting to preprocess data.

          ok. Where does the pre-processing script get entered?

            Re: Updating External Data

            This is what I tried:

            report->Section events->Detail->onrecord

            Created inline xbasic to set the value of the var calccomml.

            select case
            case Invoice->Subtotal < 250000.00
            calccomml = (Invoice->Appliedamount * -1) * .05
            case ((Invoice->Subtotal >= 250000.00 )and (Invoice->Subtotal < 500000.00 ))
            calccomml = (Invoice->Appliedamount * -1) * .03
            case Invoice->Subtotal >= 500000.00
            calccomml = (Invoice->Appliedamount * -1) * .02
            end select

            now i still have to tweak this code for the final results but you get the idea.

            It set the var calcomm1 but used the value in the very last record. plus if i paged through the report calcomm1 gets set back to 0.

              Re: Updating External Data

              Looks like you need to put this into a calculated field rather than the onrecord event.

              Also look at the case() function in the help file...
