Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Avantquest?

Well, here we are 8 months later, and just last week I got another mail shot from Alpha. This time for a 2 licence developer edition at an upgrade price of $199, plus a runtime licence for another $99. A5 v10.5 does all I want, but I so like the product that I don't mind upgrading - but not at any price.

The $298 price should be about 190 sterling - quite affordable, so I clicked the link to find that as I am in the UK I am forbidden to purchase from the main Alpha site, having instead to go to However, this is a dead site, yet is still registered to a Jill McSweeney, trading as of 10 Briery Meadows Barnsley S73 0QW.

Aventquest's site have no mention of A5 on their front menus, so a search has to be made. However, looking at the v11 Developer on their site, I see no mention of two licences, plus the price for this without the runtime is 261. (over $400!). To buy the runtime alone is 375 (over $575!). For Developer and Runtime as a bundle, the price is 598.80 (over $900 - three times the mailshot upgrade price!!!)

Seems to me that users this side of the pond are expected to provided someone some handsome profit (probably mostly for Aventquest). It's not going to be from me though, as at this price I'll still stick with v10.5.

        Re: Avanquest?

Thank you for the quick reply - I thought I was one of the few working on a Saturday!

As you may have gathered, Avanquest is not held in high regard by a number of people in the UK. Although they probably do excel sometimes, the word on the street is that their customer service often leaves a lot to be desired. Their USA operation may be more slick, but for the UK they don't even list a telephone number should a problem arise that can't be solved by e-mail - just a fax number in France. Any company that deals with customers must in my mind provide good means of contact - life is not perfect and things do go wrong, and sometimes this gets compounded with more than one error, and when this happens customers sometimes need to speak with a human being, and not be restricted to filling in a web-form.

I've never had to phone Alpha, but I know you have a number should something go wrong and I need to speak to someone - that is comforting.

For software that is downloaded, and thus by it's very nature international, I fail to see why Alpha would wish to associate themselves with a third party and require users of certain countries to only go through them. I can honestly say that this association does nothing to enhance the reputation of Alpha Software. In consequence, I would urge Alpha to review the strategy and reasons for continuing this association.

I've e-mailed you direct about the link, and I'll e-mail sales as you suggest, thank you.

            Re: Avanquest?

It will be good to deal direct again, it was a nightmare trying to buy here.
We even looked at other database software to migrate to.
Probably missed the good offer bundles that have come out, have to wait and see what comes along.
