Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filtering Dialog DropDown (What am I doing wrong?)

I have a simple dialog component with three fields:

    Start_Date / End_Date / Idno

The first two are simple fill-in fields, but the last one is a drop-down which I want to filter on the user's logged in ulink via session variable.

I have a field in my USERS table called "Repagency" and another called "Idno." The Repagency identifies the agency the user works for, and the Idno identifies that actual person.

I have the drop-down set to dynamic, and pointing to the USERS table at the "Idno" field. The filter is setup as follows:

    Repagency = session.__protected__repagency

But it doesn't work. Instead I get a message that says "Error creating list: no such field."

    * It should be noted that I have used this exact filter many times before in grids and lookups with no problems, it's only in the dialog that I can't get it to work.

I also tried: Repagency = "session.__protected__repagency" based on a recent message board post, but that doesn't work either.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

    Officer Hartnett,

This may sound silly but have you triple checked that you are setting the session variable correctly? Does it have a value? Is Repagency inside of the table?

I'm not the expert but I'm pretty good at making these mistakes. Ha. If you've used these before then it seems like you might be overlooking something obvious.

Hi Rod, nice to see a fellow cop/developer on here.

Yes I'm pretty sure the expression is correct, as I copied it from another working lookup (not a dialog), and even tried it a couple of times just to make sure that I didn't miss something the first time I copied it.

It's probably something simple that I am just overlooking.

I agree the expression looks good but what about:

Repagency? Is that a field in the table and typed correctly?

session.__protected__repagency? Did you set it correctly beforehand?

Note: I'd love to see what you are doing for the department. I am currently developing an application to track special/large operations. I worked for the county's Tactical Narcotics Team and struggled using their database so I am developing my own from the experience. It's great for operations with multiple arrests, locations, seizures, etc.
        Thanks,

Hi Rich, I am a v9 user but it may be the same here and I note that Repagency may be a field in your table but not on the dialog. I have sometimes had to put a field on a dialog as a hidden field before I could use it in a filter. Hope this helps.

Re: Filtering Dialog DropDown (What am I doing wrong?)

You guys are just guessing, try creating a Dialog dropdown filter from scratch. A Dialog dropdown filter is not structured the same a a Grid dropdown filter. Rich, the answer is right on your third image attachment, on screen help notes.
