Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Utilising pdf files from within Alpha5 v8

    Re PDFs, I have a need for a user to append, attach or embed pdfs in an a5 data file ... or if not possible then store the file reference and later access pdfs from within an A5 app. I've not been programing A5 for a while, so I'm rusty. However there's a 2006 thread suggesting a way to do the latter in A5v7 ...

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...light=view+pdf

    Can anyone confirm this is (still?) the optimal way to meet this need?

    look in the V8 Help files - at the index type pdf - and note there is a function pdf_append() and pdf_merge() and pdf_pagecount()

    I use the append function in a loop, to save all reports for a project to a pdf file and append - so I end up with a giant pdf that contains all relevent data for the project - which is saved for audit/documentation/legal purposes.

      Re: Utilising pdf files from within Alpha5 v8

      sorry - misread your question

      here is code that I use to let a user go to a folder and click on files to select

      Code:
      parentform.cancel()
      flist=ui_get_files_multiple(remember,remember,"*.jpg")
      if flist=""
       end
      end if
      temp=word(flist,1,crlf())
      tempn=w_count(temp,chr(92))
      temp2=word(temp,1,chr(92),tempn-1)
      remember=temp2
      text1.show(); text1.text="Please Wait"; text1.refresh(); 'xbasic_wait_for_idle()
      t=table.current()
      for i=1 to w_count(flist,crlf())
       t.enter_begin()
        t.prproject=var->projectn
        t.meetingid=var->meetingid
        t.image1=word(flist,i,crlf()) 'an image reference field
        t.imagepath=word(flist,i,crlf()) 'a character field - 255 wide
       t.enter_end(.t.)
      next
      parentform.resynch()
      text1.text="Finished"; text1.refresh()
      sleep(1/5)
      text1.hide()
      browse1.fetch_first()
      remember is a global variable that keeps track of the last directory that was used, and I save to the registry for the workstation when they exit and initialize when they open the adb

      the only part you would want to write to a field would be the line

      t.imagepath=word(flist,i,crlf())

      tried to make a picture for you - but the image max size is 100KB - and even a tiny pic saved as a png is 137 KB.
