Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5V10 server newbie question about possible client.

    Hello all.

To begin with I am new to A5 application web server.
Normally I work only with Unix and Apache, but was asked to provide some support for A5 web server.

I have checked some links and read some articles and as long as I understood, we have a server "A5ApplicationServer.exe", which was started by "AlwaysUP". it works.

What I cant find is a client to start/stop or reload it.
We have a client on a remote host "alpha5.exe", but it works only with local server, but my server is on remote host.

On remote host where we have A5ApplicationServer, also there is a client "alpha5.exe" in a5v10 directory, but I cant start it. It closes after start.

My question is, can some one explain me please, how should I deal with ApplicationServer?
Is there any tool which can connect to it and to show my at least logs, start/stop/restart it?

    Thank you in advance.
    Vas.

Re: A5V10 server newbie question about possible client.

AlwaysUp will have the path to the A5ApplicationServer.exe application.

If you run this it will load and an icon will show up in the system tray.

It will report an error that it cannot start as it's currently running through always up.

You can right click on this icon after it loads, and you'll have a configure option in the menu.

From here, you'll find a tab that lets you turn on logging - but these may not be the logs you are looking for.

In order to use the settings after saving, look back at AlwaysUp and right click on the alpha server and restart it. This will kick anyone out of the application that is running.

      Hello
Thank you very much for your answer.

      BUT,

The version of our AlwaysUp is 4.1.2 and I do not see any icon in my system tray.

I know that the server is very old, but it works and any updates in undesirable.

Is there another way to get/see A5ApplicationServer configuration without using AlwaysUp?

      Thank you in advance
      Vas

Just run the Alpha exe even though it is already running bu AlwaysUp. It will complain and give you a red icon in the system tray. Right click on that and select confugure. Config, save, close, etc. Then restart the copy running under AlwaysUp.

          Thank you for suggestion.
          BUT,

I have tried to execute alpha5.exe from A5V10 directory, but it wont start, I can see an empty window and then it closed it self immediately.
I start to worry about it and open this thread, as long as I am not really experienced with A5 products and this server is our production server.

          Thank you in advance
          Vas.

Re: A5V10 server newbie question about possible client.

The server executable is named A5ApplicationServer.exe and should be in a folder named "a5V10 ApplicationServer", but the original developer could have installed it anywhere. The fact that you have an A5V10 folder likely means that ZebraHost does currently or used to manage this server.

But let's back up. What exactly do you want to configure? Is the server up and running, and is a website operational right now?

You can always bypass AlwaysUp, it is not necessary in order to run your server. We use it only because it causes the web server to run as a Service.

You can go to AlwaysUp, determine what executable it is firing, then toggle the web server OFF and then run that executable manually. That WILL give you a green icon in the system try where you can run config, etc.

But again, what are you wanting to configure?

I was trying to explain that I cant turn this server off.

I need to see logs if any, I need to see where does it keep document root and other web documents. I need to see configuration, like maximum requests allowed, also amount current http connection (netstat can also shows it). I would like to back up everything.

I know that Apache allows to keep executable scripts everywhere, all you need is to check httpd.conf + /Include.

Actually we have two folders: /A5V10 and /A5V10 ApplicationServer. I thought I can just run alpha5.exe from /Prog_Files/A5V10, but I can't

              Thanks

There are too many possibilities to properly direct you. If you want, send me a message and I will remote in to your server. In two minutes I can tell you what you have and what to do next. Otherwise we can continue to try here.

                  This part is unacceptable.

Could you explain me why cant I start alpha5.exe?

Is there any config files where I can find paths to web pages?

                  Thank you in advance.

Re: A5V10 server newbie question about possible client.

The default location for the config file (xml) is C:\Users\All Users\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Application Server Version 10\Installations\CProgramFilesx86a5V10ApplicationServer\ApplicationServerConfig.xml but it could be anywhere. If you find that file, it will tell you where the logs are and if they are turned on or off (True/False). The default is False, meaning no logs.

If the Alpha web app server is being managed by AlwaysUp then another possibility to find the configuration xml file is to look at AlwaysUp, look at this instance for your server and see if the Application line includes the words "-configFile = C:\some_location...". If so, then that will point you to the configuration xml file. The -configFile parameter allows you to store the config file in a location of your choice.

Again, Alpha5.exe is the executable for the Developer copy of Alpha, not the web app server. As to why it does not "run", no one will be able to know that without looking at your server. Perhaps you can cut a video of your attempts and someone can spot something while watching the video.

Found it in the first place.
