Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    saving to file

After I have selected the records needed to print labels, I save them to a floppy drive file for later use in Labels Unlimited programs. Now things I save to the floppy drive do not come over despite the drive light indicating action. This situation has recently developed. Any clues to solution, please?

    Floppy Drive Problem(s)

    Charles,

Your problem could be in one of three areas: the disk drive, the floppy disk or the data. Floppy drive can go bad (ie, operate outside of design specs). If you write to a diskette on a good drive (one operating within design specs) and then try to access it on a drive out of specs, the drive light will come on, indicating attempted access, BUT the bad drive cannot access the data on the good disk. A possible solution would be to try to access the diskette on a known good drive. Also, you can possible find an diskette drive cleaning kit (lint and other contaminants can build up on the read-write head).

The diskette could be bad, (bad sectors, scratches, oil from fingers on the recording area, etc.) Hold the diskette carefully, keep your fingers off of the area in the elongated read area and rotate the media by the center hub. If you see any scratches, the diskette is bad; toss it. Try using a new diskette, but that is no guarantee. Back in the 'old days' I've found multiple bad diskettes in a new box.

There could be a problem with the data (linkage between non-contigous storage sectors lost).

    Hope this helps.

Open one of the sample databases, e.g. avmovies, and try the same thing. Also, for test purposes, try copying to your C: drive instead. If the copy works with the test file, then that means your real database is corrupted.

Otherwise, it may be a floppy drive problem.

        Dave,

Thank you for the information. I've tried your suggestions but still have the problem.

          Problem Saving to Drive A:

          Charles,

At least we know what doesn't fix the problem.

If you have a USB flash drive, try saving the file to it. If you're successful, it would seem to indicate some other problem having to do with the floppy drive. Also, you could borrow or buy an external USB floppy drive and try that. Again, if that works, the problem is with the internal floppy drive.

          Good luck.
