Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL recommendation ?

This summer I plan to explore the SQL features of Alpha Five (Desktop) a bit.

Anyone care to recommend a specific SQL database for me to use in my "explorations" ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Tom

Welcome to the dark side :)

Either MySQL or MS SQL Express are good places to start. In any event make sure you bookmark http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp as a valuable resource!

    Kind regards

You might find MySQL easier to install (and to use).

If you're going to be trying to do any interfacing with customers who are Microsoft shops it might be worth it to bite the bullet and take up the learning curve with Microsoft SQL Express. The 2012 version is out now and works perfectly with Alpha. In either case you'll find the stability and performance of a true SQL server is well worth the effort. Plus, with SQL Server 2008 and later you can play with all the new geographic proximity search features in Alpha. As an added bonus you can setup all of your calculations on the back end using computed fields and if you ever need to access your data from a different front-end client you won't have to setup your business rules all over again.

        Good luck!

MS SQL Server Express 2012 included a little nugget called LocalDb (formerly Denali I believe). Its full SQL Server with a path to move to larger versions of MS SQL. I dont know if or how A5 would connect to it, but it appears it couldn't be easier to deploy with an application. Anyway I am a fan of MS SQL Server having having used for longer than I care to remember, SQL Server Express offers good management tools and GUI, it has SQL Reporting Services which may or may not be useful as well as other things. T-SQL is exceeding powerful and based around core SQL standards. If you know SQL you can get up to speed very quickly. All in all I feel it may be one of the best MS products offered. SQL Express is free....always good.

Here are a couple of links to the MS SQL LocalDB if you or anyone has an interest"

Tom, if you go for MySQL, then I suggest you get a free copy of Toad for Mysql. It's great to have Alpha and Toad running at the same time.
You can see what's going on, build SQL tables from the format of Alpha Tables (with a bit of padding syntax) and I found it made the whole process a lot less one sided.
You might want to get the MySQL Workbench from M/soft as well - also free.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

I started with SQL Server from here. The basic is still the same.
