Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Type not found 'C' Error - Reports, Letters and Labels

    Hi All,

We had alpha five running on an old version (something like v4) for a long time.

We have recently upgraded to v11 and have all the data stored in MySQL tables online. All the active-link tables and forms work perfectly...

However, 95% of the reports, letters and labels come up with the following error when you try and 'run' them:

    Error: Type not found 'C'

I have no idea what this is? I have checked all the filters, fields and they are all correct.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sam

Look on the Wiki for Errors and Variable Scoping.
Have you had this working on any V5 instances Sam?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Sam,

You might also check for data type mismatches. Sounds like the report layout is expecting "character" data but maybe MYSQL is feeding it something else.

Re: Type not found 'C' Error - Reports, Letters and Labels

        Hi Guys,

        Thanks for your feedback.

I have narrowed it down to one table in my set 'memsec.set' called 'berths'. If I remove this table from the set the report works fine (except the obvious error message that it cant load the berth data - which is obvious).

I have deleted the berths table - created a new active link table - created a new set linking memsec, boat5, licence and berths back to gether - created a new report with a field from each table in the set. Run the report and I get the same error.

I will attach several images to show all the different bits to see if anyone can work it out visually...

          Hi Tom,

Yes that what I thought but MySQL is VarChar and I've even tried Char, nothing seems to work :(

Mem_No is an integer in the SQL Table.
              What is it in MemSec?

I can't see the structure of the active link dbf.

Pls show it, and for each field show us how the corresponding MySQL datatype.

                Thanks.

                  Hi Guys,

Its a int in the SQL table yes, but its an active link table so surely the field type is going to be int too? I have refreshed the definition.

Here is best screen I can really show you unless you can provide me instructions for a more specific screen...

                  Cheers, Sam

I suggest you restructure the berths active link table. Begin with the link field and one other. Test the report. Restructure to add another field. Test the report. Continue til you find the field that's causing the problem.

                        Hi Tom,

Yes I did that and everyone didnt work lol - so it was a common theme with every field in that table.

I have however SOLVED it - I'm not 100% sure how this has fixed it but im happy

In MySQL I changed all the fields to allow 'NULL' as shown below and 'ta-da' it works:

                        alpha5solved1.jpg

Please remeber to Refresh the definition in Alpha Five to ensure the Active Link is up to date (Structure-wise).

Thanks anyways guys! If anyone else gets a similar problem, do not hesitate to ask a question.
