Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why no promotions for desktop developers?

I am a desktop developer and while I am not necessarily in a position to move from v10.5 to v.11 I am curious. Over the past months I have seen countless emails promoting v11 Developer with AppServer and feature packs. Sometimes 2 or 3 a day. I have not seen many if any promotions for Developer plus Runtime. I know there is a huge interest in web development and many if not the majority consider it the future. Still there are a number of us working on new desktop apps or maintaining existing ones, and at some point we will want to move to v11. The right promotion or sale will be a great encouragement towards moving us there.

I know A5 has said they are not forgetting the desktop developer but ... then maybe I am just on the wrong email list server.
    Regards,

Re: Why no promotions for desktop developers?

I was curious about the lack of desktop specials myself, so I e-mailed Alpha. I received a fast and courteous response offering me the Version 11 developer and v11 Runtime software, at a very fair price. I promptly paid the amount requested and awaited the items in the mail. After 2 weeks went by and not hearing anything, I e-mailed my salesperson again only to be sent a puzzling response with an attached generic letter from Richard saying I attempted to buy something that was no longer supported by Alpha and some references to subscription pricing..

I have since requested clarification on whether the desk top is dead or what is up?? Needless to say I have asked for my money back if I can't buy the A5V11 runtime & developer versions, I am not interested in subscriptions or web development. I suspect a mistake has been made, or should I say I hope a mistake has been made.

Very strange, given all my years of good experiences dealing with Alpha....

Re: Why no promotions for desktop developers?

You are not to only one Mike who isn't interested in either subscriptions or WAS, however the "bundling" of Desktop and WAS makes it difficult to separate the two for sales purposes.
There was an offer on a while back where you could buy just the desktop only dev version but that seems to have disappeared.
Seems that what the customer wants is not what Alpha are now selling. The old adage "we make what we can sell, as opposed to selling what we make", isn't appropriate any more.

Suggest you contact [email protected] personally and ask for the goods as offered or at least a full V11 and R/Time for the same price.

All too often the people that love AlphaSoftware most are the most critical.
A quick view of the website reveals the offering shown below.

Re: Why no promotions for desktop developers?

When I started this thread it had to do with the primary focus of all the recent A5 offers, blog posts, etc being about web side of the product. Also there have been some web dev packages in the promotions that I have not seen duplicated for those of us on the desktop. I expressed concern that this may be a sign of.... well you know. I appreciated I could go the web site and pay full price for the upgrade which is not something I am inclined to do. That however misses the underlying point of the op.

The great thing about alpha software is you can call and ask about the promotions.
A while back they had promotions for desktop only developers, and then for web only developers.
I questioned the web only offer as it was something I hadn't seen before. After some conversation
I was able to get a desktop developers license and runtime at a reasonable prices.

Re: Why no promotions for desktop developers?

My situation was, as I suspected, a mistake. Or better put, a problem on my part. The e-mail purchase confirmation went into my junk mail folder, even though I get all the other Alpha stuff ok. There was no real answer to the puzzling e-mail telling me that Alpha was not supporting the product I purchased, except a statement that V11 is still supported.

As Gregg notes above and John confirms, the products are on the website, albeit at a higher price than what I paid. I, like Gregg, asked for a promotional price and it was offered. But the real question of this thread remains, why are we not getting promotional e-mails for the desktop??

To be clear, it appears I have purchased a Desktop Developers version and unlimited Runtime, both Version 11, although I must admit I thought I was buying the full developer version.....but that would be a different thread.
