Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' - I presume there is simple omission.

I am for the first time, attempting to connect to a MySQL server with A5.

MySQL is running in session 0 on 'localhost', and can be accessed using the command line interface and using Navicat. In A5, I'm getting an "Unable to connect" message. Not finding anything in help, or anything that seems to relate in "settings." The connection info in A5 seem to match the same in Navicat except that Navicat has a "Named Pipe, Socket" setting that I have not found in A5. Any idea what I'm missing or doing wrong?

For what it's worth, I've tried starting MySQL both maually and automatically with the same result. I've tried as the root user, and as another user. In every case I've tried, Navicat and command-line work, but A5 does not connect.
    I'm using Win7 x64, MySQL v 5.5.23, A5v11 build 2549.
In A5 I'm using the connection wizard: Select Database>Create a database from linked data>Define Connection String to Connect to your Database>

In the "Create SQL Connection String" window, these are my settings:
    Connection Type: MySQL
    Hostname: localhost
    Port: 3306
    User: root
    Password: ********

"Database" is empty, as is the drop down list. If I click "Refresh", A5 displays an hourglass for about 1 second, and the "Database" textbox and dropdown remain empty.

When I click the "Test Connection" button:
    Unable to connect
    Database API specific error

Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
Consult your database documentation for further information.
2003 - 'Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)'

In Navicat, these are my connection settings:
    General.Connection Name: mysql
    General.Host Name/IP Address: localhost
    General.Port: 3306
    General.User Name: root
    Advanced.Use MySQL character set: Yes
    Advanced.Use Named Pipe, Socket: mysql

Re: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' - I presume there is simple omission

Is it possible that there is a firewall rule for navicat but none for Alpha?
Check your windows firewall and add an exception for the Alpha5WebServer and IDE on port 3306.

    See if that helps

I dont think the named pipe is your issue.
Check your MySQL configuration and make sure TCP/IP connections are allowed

Alpha is probably trying to connect over TCP/IP and Navicat is trying through Named Pipes

        C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5\bin Double click the MySQLInstanceConfig.exe
        Just keep hitting next

One of the screens is the Network Options:
Make sure TCIP/IP Networking is enabled and check the 'Add firewall excpetion for this port'

Let me know if that helps

            This post was mostly redundant.
