Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: "Printer error: print hdcPrn is Null" while printing, any ideas?

I still have a problem with printing. Getting same error:
"Printer error: print hdcPrn is Null" or sometimes no message and nothing prints.

      I have deleted OneNote

I have six actual printers installed that are current and active

      Then I have:
      Alpha Five Printer V4p5
      Fax
      Microsoft XPS Document Writer
      Peachtree E-Mail Writer V3
      Quicken PDF Printer

      Win 7 Pro, 64-bit

      Alpha Five V11 build 2549

      Any ideas?

      Thanks
      Tony

Re: "Printer error: print hdcPrn is Null" while printing, any ideas?

I opened Alpha Sports and tried to print an invoice and received this error message:

        Script:OnPush line:19
        :Report.Print("Invoice".query.filter,query.order)
        Printer error:printer_init - print_dialog returned NULL hdc

I have received this error a time or two in my app as well

        Thought this info might help

        Thanks

          Edited -

Tony, sorry about the previous post. On re-reading this entire thread I see that my ideas had already been tried. Since you don't have trouble printing with other apps the problem is not likely to lie with your hardware.

Remove the Alpha printer using the Windows controlpanel
go inside the alpha executable folder, and find the exe for reinstalling - most likely in x86 program files\a5v11\amyuniv4\installlamyuniprinters

then go back to the windows control panel, devices and printers, and right click on the Alpha V4p5, and right click and view printer properties and be sure it is set to the null port.

              Martin,

I've just checked the properties of my AlphaFivePrinter V4p5 on my Win 7 machine. You're correct. The checkbox on the ports tab is set to the NULL port. I don't recall doing this manually. Hopefully this will solve Tony's issue. Interestingly, on my XP machines the port is set to LPT1.

Tom, I first ran into the issue when users had installed OneNote - which hijacks the Null port. I think there is more than one way to resolve the issue, but this is my current fix. It may be an issue for a LOT of users, but because they have never printed to a PDF they don't they have it. I ran into it early, in XP, as I have 2 clients that print all (literally) their reports to PDF's.

Re: "Printer error: print hdcPrn is Null" while printing, any ideas?

I had this error come up and the wording is misleading. What the problem really was that there were 2 printers defined in different report settings.
If you specify a specific printer, it must be the same under these settings:
                  File - Print Setup
Report - Properties - Band - Report Properties - Specify Printer
