Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Setting Initial Value in Child Grid new record to value in parent Grid field

    I have a parent grid with a linked child grid.

    Parent has a field named "Status" (type character) which is set to a value of "O" for open or "H" for hold etc....

    There is a linked child grid to this parent.

    When I add a new record to the child grid, I want to set the "inital value" in the detail view of the child.status field to be the same as the parent.status field.

    I am at a loss on how to do this.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Did you figure out how to do this? I want to do the same thing.

      Re: I want to do the same thing

      I ended up setting a session variable "session.CurrentRowStatus" and then used that to set the Initial Value on row add.

        In the parent grid, what is the name of the event you edited and what did you enter as the script?
        In the child grid, what is the name of the event you edited and what did you enter as the script?

          In the Server Side Events -> OnExistingRowRender

          I set session.CurrentRowStatus = e.rowData.data("JIntType")
          and then I process an evaluation for the purpose of the status event to display within my grid.

            Wrong server-side event for parent grid or formula is wrong

            In the Parent grid Server-side Events I entered the following:
            Code:
            function OnExistingRowRender as v (e as p)
            	session.Field1 = e.rowData.data("Field1")
            	session.Field2 = e.rowData.data("Field2")
            end function
            In the Child grid Server-side events I entered the following:
            Code:
            function onInitialValueCalculate as v (e as p)
            	e.newValues.Field1 = session.Field1
            	e.newValues.Field2 = session.Field2
            end function
            The values transferred from the parent grid are always from the LAST row of the parent grid, not the parent-grid row from which the child grid is opened. So either the parent's event is wrong or the formula is wrong. Suggestions?

              Hi Lawrence Sprowls,

              Have you found the solutions?

              Regards,

                  Re: Setting Initial Value in Child Grid new record to value in parent Grid field

                  As stated above in my reply, I was able to do this with a session variable.

                  Set the session variable in the Parent Grid In the Server Side Events -> OnExistingRowRender equal to the value of the field I want: session.CurrentRowStatus = e.rowData.data("JIntType")

                  Then in the child Grid I set the INITIAL VALUE for my STATUS Field to session.CurrentRowStatus

                  I have this with an editable grid with 6 blank new records with no problem.

                    Your solution is not correct

                    The child grid is specified in the parent grid 'Row Expander > Row expander linked content'.

                    1. When the child grid is opened from the parent grid, the values transferred from the parent grid are always from the LAST row of the parent grid, not the row of the parent grid from which the child grid is opened.
                    2. If values in the last row of the parent grid are changed and saved, the values transferred to the child grid remain those that were in the parent grid before the changes were made. This is because the parent grid's event does not fire to refresh the values in the session variables.

                      Re: Your solution is not correct

                      If you have a button in the parent that you click to expand to a child grid, why not do an AJAXCALLBACK to set the session variable to the current row selected values and then have it open your child grid.

                        Child grid is in Row Expander

                        The child grid is in the parent grid's row expander. There is no button.

                          Re: Setting Initial Value in Child Grid new record to value in parent Grid field

                          on the "Defined Linked Content" screen where you are tying the Parent field to the Child field.
                          Any field that is linked is copied to the child record.
