Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    db help

I have an Excel file from Quickbooks that is a Sales Order report.
I have created an Alpha DAO import of this SO report and the table is called "Work_Order.tbl"

I have a table already set up in Alpha called "iteminventoryassemblyline.tbl"
This is a parts list of the "Item" field in the "Work_Order.tbl"
The "iteminventoryassemblyline.tbl" has a field called "Name".
The linking fields of the 2 tables, are, "Item" in the "Work_Order.tbl", and "Name" in the "iteminventoryassemblyline.tbl"
What I am trying to accomplish is print out a report showing how many parts of the "iteminventoryassemblyline.tbl" I need for the "Work_Order.tbl"
In the field "iteminventoryassemblyquantiy", I need to multiply this times the "Qty" field in the "Work_Order.tbl" to show how many of the "iteminventoryassemblyitem01" field I need.
I am not sure which operation to do this.
Any help nudging me in the right direction would be appreciated .

    Hi David,

Sounds like what you are asking about is BOM (Bill of Materials). The way I see this, you have a table with the parent of the assembly part and a child table of all the items that make up the part with the quantities of each item required for the part. Now when you call the Works_Order report it will look at the child table and multiply the number of items needed for that part by the number parts required.

There have been several threads about BOM. Do a search and see what else pops up.

      Re: db help

      David,

I see that your work order table contains several records for the "job", each of which is liimited to a single part. I see that your items table lists the items that will be used to create the part. If my "vision" is right, then one approach to this would be to create a new set, reversing the order of your tables. If you make the items table primary and link one-to-one to the work order table I think you could generate the report you need. To do this you'd group the records in the report by work order number, and then within each work order group you'd group the items by item number ( or descrip ). The report probably won't have or need a details band. Instead the heavy lifting would be done in the items group footer, where you'd sum the item quantities after first having calculated the necessary quantities for each part. You're swimming in the deep end of the reporting pool. Does any of what I've written make sense to you?

Thanks Keith, I did some searching after your suggestion. I wasn't for sure what to search for but BOM is good. From what I have read it does sound complicated.
Thanks Tom, I will try that. I just was having a hard time getting started. That will give me something to work on.
