Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Automatic email reminders

    Hi all,

I think this has been discussed before but I still want to ask.

I am in need of an automatic email system that reads value from a table and emails reminders to people.

    Simple:
I have an "activity" table with a deadline and a person responsible.

    1. The same day at midnight I want to send an email reminder
    2. The same day at noon I want to send an sms reminder (another email thru clickatell API)
    3. At end of day send an email to the production manager (linked table)

The actual emailing should really not be a huge problem, but what kind of system can I use to automatically look at the tables and send the emails? Can A5 do it or do I have to use external software as well? Maybe I should use an admin computer running a desktop version if the desktop is able to do what I want?

    Thanks for any help!
    Robert

    Re: Automatic email reminders

I use an admin computer (virtual machine) to run reports during the night.
The combination of windows scheduled tasks and Alpha5's Timer makes it
easy to get the stuff done on a regular basis.

      Re: Automatic email reminders

I've thought about doing this in the past and I think I would probably do it this way:

      1) Download curl for windows
      2) Create an a5w page (nightly.a5w) with all the associated code. I would also probably log the output to a sql table.
      3) Make that page only accessible via localhost. (there is xbasic code to do this, basically, check some of the request pointer stuff. Maybe even use some type of access key)
      4) Set up a Scheduled job in windows to run curl and open the a5w page.

          Hi Robert,
I want to do the same thing. If possible without an additional program on the server. Did you find a solution? Thanks.

            Re: Automatic email reminders

You could try to use telnet. Something like 'telnet http://localhost/nightly.a5w 80' I think that should work...

I do exactly what Sparticuz suggests plus using CRON to schedule the activity exactly when I want.

Thanks! I will try that. Except not with Cron as i have a windows Server.

There are Windows versions of cron and curl.

                    Re: Automatic email reminders

                    Hi,

just to let you know how I have done it:
                    - created a custom component which does nothing in the onIntialRender event
                    Code:
                    e.html = ""
                    e.javascript = ""
and added my send mail functionality to the onComponentInitialize event
                    - created an a5w page
                    - added custom component to a5w page
                    - published page to server.
                    - created a new task with in the Windows server Task scheduler with a daily trigger and as an action to start a program "powershell.exe" with the argument
                    Code:
                    -command "(new-object system.net.webclient).downloadstring('http://localhost/Subfolder/reminder.a5w')"
And this works fine for me.

                    Thanks for your input!

                      Re: Automatic email reminders

Creating a custom component may not be necessary. Seems like over complicating things a bit. You could just throw all the xbasic code into the actual a5w page. But the powershell trigger is a really good idea. That removes the CURL dependency from the equation, letting you set up a job with very little effort. (I think powershell is included in server 2008, not sure about server 2003)

                        Re: Automatic email reminders

I just released an Automailer package that we developed for a number of our clients.

One of my customers was able to incorporate the code/package into their existing application in 20 minutes, and had emails up and running in less than 30 after setting up PyCron. If you're interested, take a look

                        It's for sale on http://www.alphadevnet.com/store.a5w...REA_AUTOMAILER

                        Thanks,
