Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to assign keyboard keys on forms

    In a point of sale application, using the mouse is strongly discouraged, according to end users, the keyboard is much faster than reaching for the mouse and click some buttons for certain operations like make a sale, take payments, void item etc. How do we assign shortcut keys on a form like pressing just the F1,F2,F3,F4 etc for certain operations? of course we can put some buttons and provide an accelerator key so that we can press the CTRL + the assigned key to perform some actions, what if there are no buttons?

      Jet,

      Check the onKey event in your form layouts. It can be used to trap and handle specific keystrokes. I believe most of the "F" function keys can be reprogrammed using the onKey event script. IIRC the F6 key for some reason could not be reprogrammed. Do a bit of research and experimentation, then let us know if you have questions.

          Thanks Tom, what will I code on the Onkey event? I tried a search but could not get it to work.

            Really? I opened the help, typed onKey in the Google search box (lower left of window) and pressed enter. First hit gave me this.

              Re: How to assign keyboard keys on forms

              I mean, I can't get it to work.

              IF a_user.key.value = "{}" THEN
              a_user.key.handled = .T.
              IF a_user.key.event = "F1" THEN
              END IF
              END IF

              By the way Tom, I have posted a 3 week old question about security but it is not answered, maybe experts have not came across it,My question was, How do I let end users choose who is going to access a form or not by selecting a user interface to toggle a user to restrict him/her in opening a form, i don't want end users to go to the main alpha five window to change security settings, how do i do this Tom?
              The security step here is okey http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Implem...y%20on%20forms but I want the Admin end user to dynamically change the password and assign who is going to open a button for example.The steps provided on the link is for one time setting of password, I want the admin end user to assign a password to a group and assign button or forms for them to access based on their respective rights. can this be possible in alpha five Tom?
              Thanks in advance.

                Sorry. The sentence "I can't get it to work". Means nothing to me. You know what you mean, but you haven't told us.

                In the script you display there is no key inside the french braces. The simple example in the helps is, sadly, mistaken.

                to trap the F3 key the example should be:

                Code:
                If a_user.key.value = "{F3}" THEN

                  Code:
                  If a_user.key.value = "{F3}"
                       a_user.key.handled=.t.
                       if a_user.key.event="down"
                            button1.push() 'code is under a button, like print a receipt, etc., or put code here.
                            end
                       end if
                  end if
                  neither F1 nor F6 can be trapped.

                  you can also do things like

                  Code:

                  If a_user.key.value = "{^A}"  'control-A
                       a_user.key.handled=.t.
                       if a_user.key.event="down"
                            button1.push() 'code is under a button, add a new transaction
                            end
                       end if
                  end if
                  If a_user.key.value = "{^P}"
                       a_user.key.handled=.t.
                       if a_user.key.event="down"
                            button1.push() 'code is under a button, like print a receipt, etc., or put code here.
                            end
                       end if
                  end if

                            Jet, have you figured out how to trap keystrokes and use the onKey event in your form to navigate between forms? You've given us no response to the ideas suggested to you in this thread.

                              Yap Tom, Sorry for the late reply for this, I'm having some problems connection to the internet lately, your codes and suggestions are perfectly working, I was wondering
                              what this code is all about
                              if a_user.key.event="down"
                              button1.push() 'code is under a button, add a new transaction
                              end
                              end if

                              , the (^A) is already trapped, i'm just curious of it i commented the if block and it still works, why do I need to code if a_user.key.event="down"?
                              ' if a_user.key.event="down"
                              button1.push() 'code is under a button, add a new transaction
                              ' end
                              ' end if
                              even if only button1.push() code works just the same without if end if
