Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

When the web server is running I can run all the grids in my app. I don't believe that it is a bad grid or dialog that is causing the problem...

            Two thoughts:

            1. Have you submitted a bug report to Alpha Five on the matter? That might get you a faster response --- though it is the weekend...
            2. Have you turned on all the logging information for the server? If you have, have you looked at the logs? Logging settings are available in the Alpha Five Server configuration.

                    Re: alpha five not responding

I worked with John over the weekend. The lockup appeared to be caused by hacker-like hits from foreign IP addresses rapidly opening links leading to large PDF documents. Since the PDF's were several MB and the hacker was opening several within the same second, it killed the server. In addition, the hits took all of the bandwidth (DSL) and locked up Alpha Five which was also running a LAN based Desktop system.

Suggestion was to eliminate any non-current PDF so the hacker got an error rather than opening the large PDF, move the application to an Internet based host with large bandwidth, and/or add a hardware Firewall capable of blocking non-desired IP addresses by whole country.

                    Not a bug.

A good thing to remember from this, just because a web page or link to PDF, etc is no longer on your menu, does not mean that search engines or hackers cannot hit that page or resource for years to come. In this case many of the PDF's were no longer on any active menu, but they were still being accessed by scripts from foreign countries.

Steve, I don't think that is it. I've been watching the logs this am. During this time that we think that it is high traffic, nun of the logs were written to including the error log. I sent you aa access log this am. It looks like the WAS just stops. As soon as the server starts again the logs start again.

                        Re: alpha five not responding

Unless I am way off, the logs stop because the server is serving up the PDF's to the requester, and when the PDF's have finished (a couple minutes) then the server allows traffic and 'the logs start', because there IS traffic now. I suggested a good test was to pull the plug on your DSL modem so there is no incoming traffic and watch to see if you still have server issues.

You do have a few more options.
You can move the files in question to a different name or bury them in a different folder.
You can also use the Application Server's ip allow/deny feature depending on your situation.

I have had 2 slowdowns. Both times I shut down port 80 at the router. Both slowdowns continued for another 60 seconds. When the cpu returned to normal I turned the port back on.
