Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5 Server on Port 80 - IIS on Port 88 :: Port 88 Blocked by ISP

I'm developing a site that will be accessed almost exclusively by users from military networks. My site has A5 Application Server running on port 80 and currently a wiki and forum being served by IIS running on port 88.

From OUTSIDE the military networks, I can easily access the wiki and the forum using an explicit URL (http://www.2xcr.com:88/readiwiki for example). From INSIDE military networks I cannot see the pages served through the IIS server at all; they appear to be blocked.

In order to host the wiki and forums - and a planned support ticket system - I have no choice but to run the two servers. I also know these servers have to be on separate ports.

My question is: What do I need to do in order to get the IIS port 88 content to show on browsers within the military networks?

I've been searching for suggestions, but as a server novice I'm not sure how to approach this. I have read on Virtual Hosting, but unsure whether that is the right route. Requesting that port 88 not be blocked by the military is not an option, for obvious reasons.

Please provide as much detail as possible because as I mentioned, I am new to this world. I can follow directions well, but I don'tknow all of the acronyms and implied procedures at this point. Many thanks!

    Matt,

I have not been doing much programming with Alpha at this point but I do spend time reading the forum. If I understand correctly you can have more that one IP address assigned to a single network card in your server. Doing that should allow you to bind IIS to port 80 for one IP address and bind alpha to port 80 for the second ip address.

I can not give you any directions as I have never done this but this is what I gather from reading the forum. You can try searching the forum for the thread or others might chime in with more details.

      Jeff:

Thanks for the note. I have three IPs on my VPS, so I suppose I could assign the IIS server to a different IP. What I don't know is a) How to do this, or b) What effect this would have to users seeking to access the content on the IIS server directly, since I do not want them to have to enter a different URL/IP address.

Something to consider though. Thank you!

Re: A5 Server on Port 80 - IIS on Port 88 :: Port 88 Blocked by ISP

Though I have yet to finalize, after a couple of days of searching through countless sites I think I have a solution. My VPS service contains 1 shared and 2 dedicated IP addresses. I created a nameserver record through the DNS for the 3 subdomains that will reside on my IIS server using one of the dedicated IPs (IPdedB). Next chance I get, I will edit the bindings for the subdomains to point to IPdedB. Hopefully, this will direct any visitors to the subdomains to my IIS listening on port 80 through IPdedB.

Once I have that side of the setup working I will edit the nameserver record for my top-level domain so it points to my A5WAS on the other dedicated IP (IPdedA). In A5WAS, I will edit the settings to allow it to listen only to IPdedA on port 80. Hopefully, this will direct visitors to the TLD to my A5WAS listening on IPdedA on port 80.

Does anyone see any flaw in my logic? If A5WAS will object to sharing port 80 - even if on a different IP than IIS - then I'd rather find out now before I waste precious time on this approach. Thanks.
