Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fail to open document

Hi all, its been a while and I'm just getting back to using alpha, I left off using V9. I have windows 7 64 bit installed on a work station. I moved my database from old station using XP and when I try to open it I get the message " fail to open document" the database wont open. I tried creating a new database and importing my tables and sets but it wont allow because its a secure database and bound.

    Please help.

    Thanks Friend..

Unlikely. You probably received the message "failed to open document". This has to do with write permissions for the directory in which the database resides.
    There can be only one.

Yes this is the exact message I'm getting. I saw it with my own eyes. It says "failed to open document" I will chwck the permissions for the the directory.

You might try removing the security on your original machine. Move the unsecured database to the new machine. Then secure it again.

I use to get this problem when the shortcut opens alpha but is not pointing to the correct location for the DB. Try open Alpha first that locate the DB and see if this open OK. If it does then then it may be a short cut pointer problem. Create a new desktop shortcut and then try again.

The other problem could be the ADB has become corrupt. Do you have a backup of the whole application?

                  Re: Fail to open document

                  Hi

My users get the "Failed to open document" message every now and then. They are running the Alpha Five Desktop version 10.5 application on a Server (no network optimisation). The users login via a startup (Autoexec) script which checks for the correct user details and level of access.

The sequence of events that take place are:

                  1. User clicks on the application shortcut.

                  2. Autoexec script (written in XBASIC) displays the login dialogue box

                  3. User enters the login details and click on the OK button to continue

                  4. Alpha Five displays the error message "Failed to open document".

                  5. User clicks on OK and all is as expected there after

I would appreciate any feedback on why the message appears.

                  Regards

                  Raj

                      Thanks Stan.

I checked the threat. All my users are running the 10.5 runtime version of Alpha Five accessing the database on a network server. Will have to check if users are clicking on the shortcut more than necessary to open it.

                      Once again thanks.

                        Re: Fail to open document

This is an old post, but I hope someone has solved this. I have the "Unable to Open Document" error. My database is stored on a runtime machine. The developer machine and other runtime machines can open the database as usual. If I use the alpha5.exe from its own directory I get the splash screen then nothing. There is no login, just the blank alpha desktop. Alpha Sports give the error as opening my own database. I installed the developer version on the runtime machine, it had a quick message about not being to connect to the internet for the registration. Now it acts like the runtime. I checked for malware, and removed some prior to this behavior. I also checked my permissions, and the database is not read only. I have 10.5 desktop version.

                          Linda,

You say your database "is stored on a runtime machine". Let's call this machine your "server". Are you trying to open the database on your server using the runtime that's installed on the same machine?

Yes. I stored the database on the runtime (server) because the majority of the data entry is done by my office manager. I do not want her to be able to change any of the forms, reports etc. It runs faster from her computer. I know I am repeating myself, but the other machines (1 with the developer edition, and 3 others with runtimes all can open the database and are working just fine as of right now.

                              Hi Linda,

Are you using Shadow on all the Runtime machines?
